26 Re: Crossing Paths at the Crossroads on Tue Jan 05, 2016 1:19 am

I sigh a bit at the thought, silently wondering if Lue is just company, or ya know.

"Well, I'm glad you're doing well." I say after a moment, pushing my plate away as I sit back to look over at him. "Really, I can't even believe you're here! Of all the places, to see you. I think I needed it."

"Well, good," I smile. "I'm glad I could make you feel better." I hesitate for a moment before holding my hand out with a cheeky grin. "That'll be twenty notes."

I laugh as I look over at him from over my shoulder, leaning over to bump his hand with my arm before picking at whatever's remaining on my plate.

"Sod off."

"Well, that'll cost you quite a bit more than twenty," I grin before chuckling as her cheeks turn pink. "Really though, it's good to see you, Ljuba. I've missed you and-," I find my throat closing on the word before I clear it and nod toward her, knowing she'll know what I mean. "I missed you."

We fall into a quiet conversation at the table, at first solemnly reminiscing about my sister before we turn to a more joyful exchange of anecdotes. The dawn pushes forth into morning, the conversation only slowing as shifts seem to change and girls come and go.

Luella is headed home when she stops by the table, smiling broadly over me to Jean as she leans against the opposite bench.

"Jean, I didn't know you'd be coming through this week," She says pleasantly, her warm smile leaving me a bit soured as I drop my head and lean over the table. "You already find yourself a friend for the day?" She asks a bit suggestively, and I can't stop myself from scowling as I look up at her.

"No." I respond roughly.

"Ljuba and I go way back," I smile, making a mental note of the way Luella's presence has soured her mood. "Haven't seen each other in an age, just catching up on the good old days now. How's your night going? Did you make any good tips?"

"Had a regular tonight, so yeah." Luella smiles, and my stomach turns uncomfortably at the implication as I shift in my seat. "You going to be staying long?"

"Haven't decided yet," I shrug as I look around at the people who have filed into the inn. "Doesn't really look like there's much work here for me, but you never know. Snow makes people lonely. Who was your regular?"

"I need to run to my room," I say quickly, before Luella can respond. I slide out of the edge of the booth, not even looking back at them as I grumble about returning shortly.

By the time I've returned, my bags on my shoulder and my guitar hanging off the other. I can't explain what urged me to go get my belongings, but I had the overwhelming need to have my belongings with me. Heading back to the booth, I can see Luella's already gone and Jean is still sitting there - his own plate of food and a few drinks for us setting out in front of him.

"Your friend leave..?" I ask softly, the growing population of the bar leaving me a bit less comfortable than I'd been before as I set my things down and sink into my seat.

"Yeah, she went home to see her family," I nod as I look up at Ljuba, frowning slightly as I notice her things. The moment Luella had answered my question, I'd regretted asking and I'd found myself wondering about Ljuba's relationship with the man. "What about your friend? Where's he hiding? Still asleep?"

"I don't know, he never came back to the room after his bath with that blonde woman." I shrug, trying to sound nonchalant as I adjust my bags in the seat beside me.

"I don't know," I shrug. "Boyfriend? Romantic interest..?"

I sigh as I shake my head, pulling my drink towards me. "No, he isn't. He's just my friend."

"Oh," I respond lamely, my fingers tracing a line through the condensation on my glass. "It's just that you seemed so upset about Luella... I thought maybe there was something there."

"It's not like that," I shrug lamely, taking a drink from my mug before I set the glass back down and twist it absently. "I don't know exactly how to explain it - He'd said something about how he wasn't ever with women, and we'd had this encounter awhile back... He made it out to be this big thing, but then we're here and suddenly he's her regular."

"Ah," I frown, nodding my understanding. "You want me to beat him up?" I offer lamely.

"Hardly seems fair - I don't think a blind man would be much of an opponent." I smirk lightly, reaching over to steal a piece of meat from his plate.

"He's blind?" I ask in surprise. "Oh, well then, why haven't you beat him up yet? Sheesh, Lju, you gotta learn to snap that whip, make him heel!"

"It's not like that," I frown again, shifting uncomfortably as I nibble at the meat. "He can screw whoever he wants, I don't even know why I'm upset."

"Maybe he's not screwing her," I shrug, the work feeling strange on my tongue as I pick at my plate. "Like I said, lots of folks just come looking for company. Blind bloke like him? I can see him getting lonely and just paying for someone to talk to."

"No, you don't know Marnin," I sigh, "He's charming and friendly, and... I don't know. I don't care if he sleeps with prostitutes, I really don't. We're not even like that, anyway. It's just weird - Back home, we're sort of the only friends we've got, and I guess I just got a bit jealous that he's got this world outside of Old North."

"That doesn't sound like the Lju I used to know," I frown a bit sadly as I remember all the people she'd used to find herself getting into trouble with. "I guess times really have changed, haven't they?" I sigh heavily before taking a sip of my hot tea and smiling slightly as I turn to face her a little better. "Well, you've got me out here. I'd love it if we could spend some time together."

Looking up at Jean, I smile a bit.

"So you haven't got a family hidden somewhere?" I ask, eager to change the subject. "I figured you'd have gone off and found you a wife and had a dozen little babies."
