76 Re: Crossing Paths at the Crossroads on Wed Jan 06, 2016 1:13 am

Rolling my eye, I stand up and adjust the bags on my shoulders as I look over at Jean at the bar.

"I don't care about your prostitute, Marnin. You have your relationships out here, so have them. I don't have to hear about them." I say sourly, finishing the drink on the table before I head for the front door.

"My prostitute," I breathe the word in a huff, my eyes stinging a bit as I swallow roughly and shake my head. "Right, yeah." I feel like my jaw ought to crack as tightly as it's clenched, my bag hitting my back as I swing it over my shoulder and march to the door. Jean is already at Ljuba's side, and I make no effort to avoid bumping into him roughly before I shove my way out the door, turning sharply to head toward the only mechanic on this side of town, determined to put as much space between us as possible.

"How fun," I sigh softly, glancing up at Jean as he offered to take one of my bags from my shoulder, "He doesn't like you, either."

"Would it be easier if I butted out?" I ask with a faint frown as I watch the man gaining an impressive distance on us despite his handicap. I can't help being a little put off by how easily he finds a gap between a carriage and a car waiting to go at the intersection down the way, his feet hesitating just long enough on the sidewalk for them to slow to a stop before he steps off into the street to go around them.

"No, no," I shake my head, "We really need the ride, and it looks like his friend flaked out so... We gotta get to the truck somehow." I laugh lamely, stepping closer behind him as I notice someone eyeing me as they pass us. My hand falls into the habit of brushing my hair over my face and fixing my hood.

"I don't know why he's being pissy, I think he's upset I didn't fawn over his prostitute."

I frown a little uncomfortably before a brisk wind catches me, reminding me of my forgotten coat back at the bar. "Oh! Shit, hold on," I frown as I squeeze her arm lightly and turn to run back to the inn. I nearly plow into one of the girls at the door, my coat in her hand as she steps back and blinks in shock.

"Sorry, thank you," I smile disarmingly as I snatch the coat from her, not waiting for her response before I'm pulling it on and running back to catch up with Ljuba. "Sorry, forgot my coat. But yeah... I don't know, Luella's nice enough. Not my favorite girl at the inn, but then she's not really my type. Plus, ya know, it's kind of weird being with a girl with the same nickname as my ex's baby sister."

"You know, he's the only person who calls me that aside from you and Maja." I add, just above a whisper. The streets are busier than they were yesterday, and from the looks of it, they'll only get worse. The growing crowd only makes me more aware of my lame speech and marred features.

"Then he called her that... That's just... That's weird, right?"

"Maybe he's projecting?" I suggest with a lame shrug. "It's not as though he can see her and say, well she's pretty, I think I like her. So maybe he just happened to like her cause her name reminded him of you? You know, and she brings him soup. My mum always said a way to a man's heart is through his stomach."

"That doesn't make it better," I frown, shrugging slightly. "Just... odder."

"Well, you could try asking him why he likes her," I suggest with a wry smile. "Things like this aren't always about sex, you know. And if you said he's not really with women, then maybe there's something else going on."

"I really would rather not dwell on it, Jean." I frown, burying my hands in my pockets as I shiver in the cool winds. "Like I said - I don't care. I shouldn't have even brought it up."

"If it bothers you, Lju, you should talk about it," I frown a bit as I glance at her, my hands tucked into my pockets as I hunch my shoulders up against the cold wind. "Even just as friends, it's important not to let shit eat at you. Imagine how you'd feel if you lost your best friend, you only friend in Old North. Even if you don't talk about it directly, you should at least try to figure it out, if only for your own peace of mind."

"I have a peace of mind." I shrug, watching ahead as Marnin turns into a garage a block up. "I'm just ready to be back on the road and out of this town. It smells like liquor and musk, makes me miss the oil and grease fryers back in Old North."

"Oh, hon," I laugh as I put an arm around her, hugging her to my side fondly. "We'll have to fix that. I'll take you into the fish shop next time you come 'round. Best smells in the whole North, and no signs of prostitutes or smelly alcoholics. Unless you count me."

"Blegh," I gag as I shake my head, laughing softly as we get closer to the garage ahead of us. "Fish are horribly unhygienic. Marnin tells me how they swim in their own fecal matter."

"Are you serious right now?" I scoff as I lean back to look down at her. "Fish is fucking delicious." I make a face, shaking my head in disbelief. "Fuckin' fecal matter - it's still delicious!"

"I'm not eating feces, but you have fun with that." I laugh, shaking my head at the man as we linger by an intersection just ahead of the garage. Marnin's long been inside the building, and I'm a bit envious that he's out of the cold winds.

"They have chicken, too," I scoff as I hesitate at the road, waiting for traffic to pass before crossing. When we reach the garage, I'm a little surprised to find Marnin inside and talking to one of the mechanics with a charismatic smile on his lips, his hand following the curved lines of my car with gentle reverence.

"Forty-nine Hudson Commodore Six," I say as Ljuba and I step in, the blind man startling a bit as he snatches his hand away from the car as though he's been burned before scowling back at me. "The convertible version, not the hardtop."

"Yeah, I gathered," he says sourly, his cane tapping the panel over the back wheel. "Bit of a design flaw, that... snow and mud gets stuck up there. Hardly a reliable car for these parts."

"I've never had any problems," I shrug before smiling over at the mechanic. "All set?"

"She's purring like a kitten," he nods as he wipes his hand on an oily rag. "And I topped off your oil for you, it was looking a bit low."

"Thanks Roy," I smile as he grabs the keys off the wall and tosses them back at me. "Do I owe you anything extra?"

"Nah, just keep me in mind next time you come through," he says, waving a hand dismissively as he steps up into his office. "Now if you don't need anything else, I'm gonna head to lunch."

Standing quietly by the door, I watch Marnin hesitantly as Jean moves around to behind loading my bag into the back seat of his car. Marnin seems to be ignoring the fact Jean is doing this, his cane tapping loudly against the edge of the car as he wanders around it, something that gets under my skin more and more with each clanging tap.

"Stop acting like you're handicap." I snap after a moment, my jaw setting a bit roughly as I head over towards them. "I know better, you're just being rude."

I glance up over the top of the car to see the man stopping, a wounded expression flickering across his face before he turns to face Ljuba. His head hangs as he stops his tapping, his hands coming to rest on the cane as he frowns at the scolding expression on Ljuba's half-hidden face.

"Sorry," he says, and for a moment, I believe he truly means it.

I break the seeming-gaze with Marnin as I head for the car, coming around beside Jean as I step past him to put my guitar into the back seat.

"Let's load up, maybe we can get back on our way before noon."

"How far is it?" I ask as I open the passenger door and nod for Ljuba to get in. I can see Marnin's jaw tensing as she does, his cane hitting the side of the car as he makes his way around to the other side so he can get in the backseat.

"Not far, maybe an hour on foot," he responds, trying his damnedest not to scowl as he pauses to fold his cane up. "Which is why I really don't see why we can't just walk."

"I'm not walking that again." I remark quickly, glancing back over the seat as Marnin crawls in behind me. "Not with all my bags. Jean's here, he's taking us."

"Fine," Marnin grumbles as he pulls his door shut sharply, immediately reaching for the window knob as he rests his cane between his knees. "But I'm keeping the window open."

"Are you really that opposed to not freezing?" I frown slightly as I bend down to look at him over Ljuba's seat.

"No," he says sternly, letting out a sharp huff as he pulls his bag into his lap possessively. "I just don't like suffocating on cologne."

Groaning, I twist back and sink into the seat, waving Jean off as my door shuts and he heads around to his side.

"You could at least pretend to be grateful." I say softly, glancing back at him over my shoulder before Jean makes it to his door.
