"We should be there sooner than that," Cael says as he glances out the window as though to gauge where we are. "We've been driving awhile, and we've got about an eighth of a tank left... so maybe another forty-five minutes to an hour. We'll have to fill the reservoir tanks in Arrowpoint before we leave - don't let me forget."

"You mean with gas?" I ask, leaning over towards him as I peer at the gauges on the dash before settling back to the floor so I can start on the second thermos. "Okay. Don't forget your gas."

"Smart ass," Cael chides as he swats at her before returning his hand to the steering wheel. "Anything special in this tea that I should be aware of? Do I need to pull over?"

"Nope." I shrug, tucking the last of the tea pouch into the thermos before staring at the kettle impatiently. "Just some herbs for flavor, and a but of an appetite suppressant. No one had much for breakfast so this should tide us all over til we can eat again."

"You made tea that makes you not hungry?" Cael asks in surprise. "What kind of witchcraft is that??"

"Concentrated chickroot." I respond, capping off the thermos once I've filled it with the boiling water before I start cleaning up the kettle and hotplate while it steeps.

"Any idiot could do it."

"Witchcraft," Cael insists as he tears off another piece of fruit with his teeth before leaning back in his seat boredly. "Chickroot, huh? That's a neat trick. I'll have to keep it in mind for the future."

I grin up at him as I tuck the last of the supplies away, rising up so I can pull out the middle seat and settle in between them.

Time passes rather quickly once the tea's done steeping, the softening of hunger's edge making everyone more comfortable. Sure enough, within two hours' time, the silhouette of a city comes into view ahead of us. I've never been this far east before, and I can't help but be a bit giddy as I rise up to look ahead impatiently.

"What do you s'pose this ones going to be like, huh?" I ask, reaching up to cut down the radio.

"What, the city?" Cael asks with a cocked eyebrow. "Probably the same as every other one we've been to."

I narrow my eyes at him, cutting him a look over my shoulder before shaking my head.

"Where's your youthful wonder!?" I chide, "I've never been here before, just like I haven't been to the last two cities. They were all different."

"You're so sheltered," Cael laughs in amusement as he glances at Teagan. "It's cute. I remember when I used to be like that."

"Don't patronize me," I smirk, rising up to point ahead as something catches me attention.

"THEY HAVE WINDMILLS!" I nearly shout, the large metal structures spinning steadily in the horizon. "Actual, moving WINDMILLS!"

Cael laughs loudly at that and I can't help but grin as well as I nudge Ljuba to go look. The windmills are impressive, even to me, their massive blades swirling in the air to generate power for the city. There are many smaller ones dotting the landscape as well, providing power to smaller communities that wish to remain free of dependency from the city's power supply. Those are nowhere near as impressive as the bigger ones, though.

"They used to have more of them," Cael says after a moment as he leans forward to look at one as we pass. "Unfortunately, big ol' things like that are a pretty easy targets during skirmishes. That's why there are so many little ones out there, too. People got tired of losing power every time the ferals attacked the city's power supply, so they built their own."

"They're so big," I grin broadly, glancing back as Ljuba crawls up to look out the windshield, too. "My grandmother used to tell me they were out this way, but I've never seen one before. Is it true these were common before the war?"

"I read they were only about as common as they are now, if you factor in population differences." Ljuba says, craning her neck past me to look up curiously. "These, and those big panels that used sun power, had a hard time taking off. Too many people were invested in the older methods."

"Unfortunately, they don't have much of a choice now," I say as I bring Ljuba's book into my lap to run my fingers over the cover curiously. "A lot of the old coal sites were destroyed during the war. The Colossus were smart that way. They knew the other races could rebuild their power grids, but once the coal was gone, their grids were useless. I assume you've heard about the Black Mountains, where the sky glows red at night? That's the coal still burning from their magic. The place is toxic, but people still go there looking for Echo stones."

"It's a sacred place," Cael nods as he glances back in the mirror. "A lot of Echoes go there for their pilgrimage. They say the mines that have stopped burning are pure echostone. People die from the sheer beauty of it."

"No," I sigh at the reverent way he says it. "They die from the carbon monoxide poisoning and the intensely high concentrations of magic that's burning the crust of the earth to cinder. Beauty has nothing to do with it."

"Because a blind guy would know," Cael grumbles before glancing over at Teagan and Ljuba and mouthing. "It's the beauty that kills 'em."

We both smirk, Ljuba retreating into the back of the van again as I lean over Cael's lap to watch the windmills pass us.

"I bet the inns here are nice." I say a bit wistfully. "I miss beds. Real, soft beds."

"That's a very good point," I yawn tiredly. "Maybe we should stop here for the night. Refill some supplies and give everyone a chance to stretch their legs."

"That was the plan," Cael responds. "This is one of my favorite places to stop. They've got good, cheap food at the inn here."

"And don't forget your gas," I say, smirking at Cael as I crawl back to start gathering my bag. Ljuba seems to follow my lead as she takes her books to start packing them away as well.

"Do you think they'll have hare?" I ask, twisting up to peer into the front, "I haven't had hare in weeks. Sort of miss it."

"If not, I bet Marn would be happy to catch one once we hit the wilderlands beyond Arrowpoint," Cael grins as he looks back at me hopefully.

"You know, you're over a century old - or so you say," I frown. "I'm fairly certain you've learned how to catch a beast in that time."

"I know," he pouts. "But I like it when you do it. It's more impressive, and you're better at it."

"Ugh," I sigh before rolling my eyes lightly. "Yeah, yeah. I'll see that we have food once we're passing through the wilderlands. This time of year, I'm sure there will be plenty of hare - out there and at the inn."
