"Then call me up a plate," I say, shrugging, "Something indulgent. I'd like a feast."

I can feel my brow furrow at that. I'm unsure what her intent might be. She could do as Richard has done many times before, covering the table in succulent meats and ripe fruits to stuff himself silly, my stomach growling in envy the whole time. Or perhaps she means to be kinder - I don't know.

"Alright," I say anyway as I get to my feet to go to the phone. "What would you like? We usually have good stuffed hen with blackberry sauce this time of year, if you like that sort of thing."

"You know the kitchens better than I do - Order whatever you think is best." I say, pulling the book back into my lap before reaching back for my glasses.

"Meat, fruit, vegetables. You know - the spread."

"As you wish," I frown a bit before picking up the phone. It takes me a moment to remember the number to the kitchens, the old rotary dial ringing into place with each number. I recognize the voice of the servant on the other end instantly, and I can't help but smile at her friendly voice. She's surprised and disappointed to hear my voice, but she says nothing as I give her the order before promising to send it up right away.

"It should be down in just a few minutes," I say as I hang the phone up and return to my seat.

I hum my understanding as I read through the pages of the book, sipping at my whiskey. Only occasionally so I glance up to see Marnin - never straying from his seat, taking tentative drinks as though waiting to be beckoned for another errand.

"Do you have any records?" I ask, never looking up from my book. "I was told I could have run of the room, but I couldn't find them."

"I, uhm-," the question makes me frown a bit. There's a record player on the desk - it's hard to deny that there are records to go to it. But my records aren't something I'm prone to sharing - or at least they weren't when I lived here. That's why they're hidden.

"Yeah, hold on," I sigh. Run of the room means all of the room, doesn't it? Still, I'm reluctant to pull the ladder for the tall bookshelf over to the right spot so I can climb up. Tucked behind a disused set of encyclopedias is my record collection - still fully intact, surprisingly. You would think they'd be covered in dust, but the fact that they aren't tells me that they've been discovered, yet clearly Richard didn't have the heart to remove them - or anything else - while I was gone.

"All yours," I say as I hop back down, wincing at the jarring movement, before I hand them back to her. "Well... I say all yours... you can listen to them, but they're not to keep. I worked quite hard to collect those."

"Which is your favorite?" I ask, laying the book face down in my lap and my whiskey to the side so I can inspect the collection curiously.

"I like the one with the coffee stain on it," I respond, not really sure what the name of the album is or even who the artist is. I'd never had anyone I could ask here, and I'd never been able to find another album from him to bring back to Old North where I could ask Ljuba. "The edges are all worn out and the spine is ripped, and there's a scratch on the record but it still plays nice."

"Chet... Faker?" My nose wrinkles at the peculiar name as I turn it over to read over the tracklist, shrugging a bit as I hold it out towards him.

"Okay, wow me with your impeccable tastes." I smirk, picking my whiskey back up.

"Is that his name?" I ask with a light laugh as I turn the record over in my hands. It's odd how familiar it is to me even after so many years. Odder still is how soothing it still is to walk over to the record, carefully lifting the lid up so as not to upset the loose screw on the back before I place the record on the spindle. My fingers guide the needle to the edge of the track as I lower the arm down before closing the lid again as the speaker crackles and comes to life with the soft melody.

My whole body aches, but I'd swear I was back home in Old North with Ljuba as I listen. I don't even notice that I've begun swaying softly as I rest against the desk, my eyes closed against the harsh reality of the luxurious room surrounding me. I'd never realized how I had carried this kind of music with me even after I'd left, the mellowness of it serving as some kind of sanctuary even out there.

"So?" I ask after a minute, my throat scratching a bit as I clear it. "Are you wow'd?"

I decide this time to give the man his privacy, returning to my book as I listen contently. The music is mellow, soft and intimate.

"It's pleasant," I respond after he's asked, glancing toward him with a polite smile. "Better than the muck my brothers listen to."

"What sort of music do they listen to?" I ask curiously. I have to catch myself as I start to sit on the bed, my back stiffening as I stand up straight again before moving to the ottoman instead. I want to sleep, but I know I can't. Not until I've been given some indication as to where this woman intends to stake her claim for the night.

"Well, the eldest listens to ruckus. I wouldn't know how else to define it." I remark, turning the page boredly. "Wilson, though, the one who's here with me? He listens to whatever's current. Whatever he can happen upon on the radios that are still functioning. I don't think he gives much thought, so long as some woman will dance to it across his lap."

"This next song is good for that," I comment with a faint smirk as I recall Luella's skillful movements. The moment the memory moves to the forefront of my mind, my smirk falters as my attention flinches toward the woman in the room. This is not the place for such thoughts.

"Sorry," I murmur, clearing my throat. "How many brothers do you have..? Just the two?"

"Wesley isn't very involved with the family business." I say, shrugging again as I find the bookmark and shut my book. "He's a bit of a loose cannon, so it's best for him to stay gone."

"Weird," I frown a bit. "Seems like every Wesley I've met is a bit of a loose cannon. You wouldn't think so, though, would you? I mean Wesley just seems like such an unassuming name."

"So does Wilson, but wait til you- Well, you can't see him, but he's a bit of a prick, too." I laugh lightly, swaying unintentionally with the music. "Both of 'em, big mean pricks. At least Wilson is leash trained."

"That's not terribly uncommon here," I laugh quietly. "I think Richard gets off on having the biggest and the baddest heeling pretty at his feet. If your family fits the bill, I'm sure he'll be quite eager to negotiate with you."

"We'll have to see how Wilson does," I laugh, "He's quite fond of his baby sister, not so sure he'd sit pretty for someone he hardly knows."

"Trust me, that's not such a bad thing," I sigh as I get to my feet to get the door before the servant has a chance to knock. She's a little startled by me opening the door before she has the chance - someone new, apparently - but she curtsies quickly as I smile and thank her for the cart of food.

"He would argue, but frankly, I think Richard has enough people scraping for his approval," I say once I've shut the door. "He insists I only say that out of jealousy - too much competition for his attention - but really, it seems reckless for one man to have so much power. This is the sort of thing that started the Great War, after all. And he does so delight in the chaos of such things."

"Wilson isn't the one who has to be bowing anyway," I say, sitting up as he brings the cart further into the room. I'm not interested in anything on it, aside maybe from the fruit.

"I'm the one who has to earn his favor, it seems. I'd expected this to be a relatively quick trip, but it's panning out to be a bit longer than I'd hoped. I think your husband has planned some ridiculous dinner for tomorrow." I sigh, sitting back as I nurse my whiskey before waving towards him.

"Eat."

I flinch a little at her waving hand before the surprise of the invitation to eat sinks in. "Thank you," I say, genuinely grateful as I pick up a plate to dish myself. It's agonizing, moving so slowly and so carefully as I watch for any ticks in her behavior that might tell me more about her or alert me to some line I've crossed. I'm slowly starting to accept that I can be a little more at ease around her - at least compared to Richard.

"And you said you've just come to negotiate trade routes?" I ask with a hint of confusion. "That is odd that he would keep you for something so simple. Any idea what this dinner is for tomorrow?" I can't help but suspect the timing of this dinner, the mention of it sitting oddly in the pit of my stomach. "And word on who the guest of honor might be?"

"I'm not entirely sure," I shrug, watching him as he fixes his plate, curious as to the hesitation in his every move. "He announced it yesterday evening, as some sort of afterthought. My guess is he's decided he'd like to wine and dine my brother and I so we might budge on our numbers regarding our transaction. We won't, but I do love a good excuse to dress up."
