I laugh as I pull out the center seat to drop the bag of mix onto, glancing back again to see Cael still sleeping.

"Do you think we should wake him up..?" I ask, "Find a spot to stop soon?"

"Nope," I say simply as I pop a handful of trail mix into my mouth and shake my head. "I'm going for a record. I haven't peed in... fourteen hours? I don't know, a long time.

"...I'm kidding, of course," I add after a second. "If we don't pull over soon, I'm gonna pee on Cael's seat."

I roll my eyes at his crudeness before twisting to crawl over the center seat and into the back.

"I'm waking him up, maybe he'll know where we are." I say, "How far the next town is."

*Cael*

I'm groggy and confused when I open my eyes, a moment of disoriented panic coming over me as I feel the van slowing on the side of the road. It shouldn't be moving at all, I'm not driving. I nearly hit my head into Teagan's face as I sit up abruptly, my hands scrambling around to find the gear knob.

"Wha-?" I frown when I see Jean in the driver seat. The time it takes me to remember that I'd told him to drive is embarrassingly long. Groaning, I rub at my face as I fight off a yawn. "Where are we?"

"I was sort of hoping you knew." I frown as I scramble back from him a bit, settling onto my haunches as Jean comes to a stop on the side of the road. "We've been driving for awhile."

"We just passed mile marker 184, if that's any help," Jean calls back as he unlatches the door and slips out into the snow. I frown a bit as I fight with the covers wound around my legs, managing to knock over everything around me before I get myself free to crawl to the front of the van.

"Going North, right?" I ask as I glance back at Teagan. "We should be close to Lethburge, I think?"

"I've never heard of it." I sigh as I twist around onto my knees to follow behind him slowly. "Will it have a spot to rest? Stretch our legs?"

"It's a decent sized city, so yeah," I nod as I fish around in the center console for a smoke. "I'd pee now if you need to, though. There may be a line to get into the city. It's the last stop before crossing into Gatz territory and they do searches sometimes to weed out unwanted travelers.

"So, ya know," I pause as I scoot to the side door so I can open it, my feet dangling from the edge of the van as I stop to light my cigarette. "Pee now unless you want to flash strangers waiting to get in."

"I think I can hold it." I frown as I crawl back up into the passenger seat to peer back at him through the gap between seat and door. "How are you feeling? You slept for a really long time."

"I feel good," I call back as I get out of the van, purposely moving someplace I can pee but still talk. "I haven't slept that good in ages."

I sink into the seat to give him some privacy, absently picking at a stray thread in the seam of the head rest as I frown.

"I'm glad," I call after a moment, "That you're feeling better.

"That's a regular cigarette, though, right?" I ask a bit tentatively, avoiding the temptation of peering around to check despite the man's urinating.

"No, it's a laced one," I say after I've finished my business and used the snow to scrub my hands. I can tell she doesn't approve the moment I go to climb back into the van. "I was still whoozy," I say a bit defensively.

I only nod as I twist around to sit in the front seat, looking out the window towards where Jean had wandered off to. He's still not wandered back.

"Just be careful with them," I remark as I rest my head against the window. "If you build your tolerance too high, you'll have to face withdrawals when you run out of what I've given you. And I'm not going to give you more until I feel it's reasonable."

"Yes, mom," I grind out a bit sourly, making a point to finish off the cigarette in one long drag and flicking it outside before I close the door. "I'd appreciate if we could not treat me like an addict, given that I've offered you no reason to assume such a thing."

Any fondness that I'd accrued for the man seems to dissipate with the remark as I look back at him over my shoulder, nodding tensely as I sit up and turn back towards the window impatiently.

"No, of course not." I respond absently, my tone lacking any real empathy, or emotion, at all. "I was simply pointing out that upping your consumption of the stones so quickly could lead to you getting sick. I was taught it's dangerous to mix methods of consumption. Just being careful."

"I've been living with this for over a century," I point out as I shove the case of cigarettes back into the center console. "I know my tipping point, and I wasn't near it - that's why I had one. Topping off my levels, whatever you want to call it, so I'll be not sick longer."

"You know your body better than I do," I say, glancing at him dryly, "You don't have to explain yourself to me."

As I glance back I can see Jean heading back towards the van, rubbing his hands together in the chill air as I reach up to cut on the radio before Cael can continue on with the tense exchange. "We should get back on the road. I'm looking forward to a real meal and a bed, if we can make it in time."

I want to argue further, but Jean crawling back into the driver's seat leaves me grinding my teeth in unwilling silence.

I'm still a little peeved when we finally arrive in Lethburge where there is, thankfully, no line to get in. Jean, on the other hand, seems more than pleased with the colorful culture in the city, and is quick to find an inn right in the buzz of things.

The frustration from talking to Cael faded as Jean drove us up to a fun-looking inn, my attention pulled entirely to the city around us as he finds a spot to park a few blocks from the inn. I'm out of the van almost as soon as it's been parked, and hurrying around past Cael to get my bag from the rear so I can start towards the inn.

"I'll see if they have some rooms!"
