"Cael?" I frown as I drop my cards, sliding out of my seat as I hurry towards him. "What happened? Who hit you?"

"No one," Cael frowns, looking between us anxiously, guilt painted all over his face. "Another echo... I hit the pavement. He took Ljuba."

"What?!" I demand, fear and shock hitting me like a truck. "You were supposed to bring her back! How the hell-?!"

"I know!" Cael shouts, tears springing to his eyes as he looks back at Teagan frantically. "Can you do something??" he asks earnestly. "He got in a range rover and took off before I could get my wits about me... is there any way you can track him or something?"

"I-" I start, shaking my head as I look back at Jean with wide eyes, "I can't track people, I mean... I could try to see, but-" I frown, looking at Cael more seriously.

"I'll try, I promise, I'll try." I nod, catching his hand and squeezing it as I turn back to go for my bags.

"Find something of hers!" I call back over my shoulder, "Something she'd have used a lot, I don't know. Something her."

"I'll do it," I snap the moment Cael moves toward her bags to look for something. The blond looks positively miserable, to his credit, but my anger burns through any sympathy I may have for the man. It's not hard to find something that is wholly Ljuba - something that resonates with her even in the short time I've come to reacquaint myself with her.

I stare at the word - Maja - and I can feel an ache at the very core of me. For a moment, the world seems smaller, the moment going on around me distant and removed as I run my fingers over the wood fondly.

"Here," I say, my voice husky and cracking as I hold the piece of wood out to Teagan, pointedly avoiding either of their gazes as I try to choke back the tears that had threatened me.

I twist from my bag to look up at Jean, reaching out to take the battered piece of wood as I look at it in confusion.

"Perfect," I say softly, noting the name and remnants of guitar frets at the front of it. "This is perfect." I nod again, taking it into my hand as I continue pulling things out of my bag.

"Uhm, Jean," I frown as I rise to set the items out on the counter near the still-steaming kettle, "I'm going to be breaking part of this... Okay?"

"Just -," I hesitate, a pang hitting me in the chest as I shake my head. "Not the name."

"I won't, I just need a piece," I nod earnestly, reaching over to cut on the overhead light as I grab a knife to dig a splinter out of it, grabbing a larger piece than I intended. I cringe as I notice the crack down the back, but sigh with relief as I see the name is unharmed.

I toss it back to him before setting the splinter aside, setting about making the potent tea I usually reserve for first waking up.

"Are you sure this will work?" Cael asks worriedly, the blond hovering closer and closer to Teagan as he tries to see what she's doing.

"No," I say sharply, my eyebrows pinching as I grab the splinter of wood and crack it in my fingers to drop into the mortar with the rest of the ingredients. "Well, sort of. It will work, I just don't know if it'll be effective."

"What do you mean??" Cael frown as he gets closer so he can peer over her shoulder.

"It's hard to know what you'll see," I say absently, grinding down the ingredients into a thick paste before moving on to gathering the last bits I'll need. "And to induce anything... I've never tried it before..."

I sigh as I scrape the paste into one of the unused teaballs, dropping it into my thermos so I can fill it with the steaming water. Once I've capped it, I nearly bump into Cael as I head back towards the bathroom.

"But it'll be something useful, right??" Cael insists as he follows her toward the bathroom, any thought for privacy abandoned. "I mean, you'll be able to see the Echo and where he took her? We can find her, right?? We have to find her! Marnin will kill me if he finds out I fucked this up! And I'm not just saying that because I'm freaked out - he will literally beat me to a pulp and break my fucking neck! I've seen him do it! To people who were just watching her, not even going near her or necessarily thinking about messing with her, but they smelled like Richard or Orlais or something and he fucking murdered them! We have to find her."

"Cael, I'll try," I frown as I head into the bathroom, setting the thermos near the sink as I look back at him. "I'll try my best, but I can't promise anything. It's hard enough to steer the direction of these visions, but to invite one? So close to dusk? I honestly don't know what's going to happen."

I sigh sadly as I move past him to cut on the water in the bath, stopping it up as I pull back the shower curtains and move to open the window above the toilet.

"But-," Cael starts before I scowl and grab his arm. He tries to jerk away from me, hostility written all over his face before I yank him back roughly.

"Let her be," I scowl as I shove him toward the living room. "She can't do it if you're distracting her."

"Don't fucking touch me again," Cael snaps as he shrugs his shoulders to straighten his shirt. Despite his hostility, he doesn't try to get past me, though his posture remains stiff as he looks around the room anxiously. I have so many questions for him - none of them kind - but given his distress, I decide to file them away for later. He'll have his chance to explain himself, to redeem himself... or he won't. Either way, it will work out.

Everything always does.

"Actually," I start, looking back towards them as they head for the hall, "Stay close?"

I cut off the lights as I grab the thermos of tea and leave it near the tub as I start to undress.

"There's a reason we seek our visions at dawn, the energies are most benevolent then. Inversely, the closer to dusk, the more malevolent. They'll be more intense, and I've never done it before. So... If it starts to seem odd, or bad, I need you to pull me out." I say firmly as I look up at them, looking specifically at Cael.

"You, not Jean."

"How?" Cael asks, his eyes widening as I raise an eyebrow at them. "I mean - is that safe?? Do you have some kind of reversal agent or something? I'm kind of running on adrenaline here, I don't want to hurt you if I have to use my magic or whatever..."

"I'm harder to break than I look," I say earnestly, "In my bags, there's a small vial in one of the corner pockets. It's... Purple or blue or something, I don't remember, but it's the only sort in there so don't worry."

I sigh as I look down at the filling tub, stepping into it and sinking in as I pick up the thermos to unscrew the top. I tug out the tea ball, unscrewing it and letting the remnants of the tea mix into the bath before I toss it aside and begin drinking the potent tea.

*Cael*

Jean is watching me closely as I step past him, pale blue eyes boring into me in a way I wouldn't have pictured from him. It's been difficult to get a read on him with him being so withdrawn since he and the other two joined us. But seeing him now, I'm beginning to think there may be more to him than just his pretty face and rocky relationship with Ljuba.

At the moment, however, it's not really something I can bring myself to worry about. Instead, I slink past him into the bathroom, the smell of tea hitting me heavily as I go to sit on the toilet where I can watch Teagan.

"How long will it take for the visions to kick in?" I ask uncertainly.

"I don't know," I admit weakly, looking around the bathroom as I curl my legs to sit indian style in the center of the bath. "Usually takes about five, ten minutes in the mornings. I made this one more potent though, so maybe sooner?"

I finish the tea in the thermos, setting it out of the tub as I arch my back, stretching and loosing my joints as I inhale deeply. "I don't usually notice the waiting so much..."

"I'll notice for you," I frown as I lean forward with my elbows on my knees, hands clasped in front of me as I stare down between my feet anxiously. "I'm scared, Teag... if something happens to her, I don't think Marnin will ever forgive me. He's an irritating bastard, but I've been through a lot with said bastard... I don't know what I'd do without his friendship. And Ljuba... he needs her."

"I'll find something out," I say softly, leaning over to rest my chin on the edge of the tub. "We'll get your friends back, I promise."

"I doubt they'll be my friends much longer even if we do," I mumble, my posture sagging heavily. "She'll tell him I was feeding information back to Richard. The only way I could hurt him worse is if I handed Ljuba over to Richard myself."

"Marnin struck me as a smart man," I offer quietly, reaching an arm over the edge of the tub to squeeze his hand as water drips from my fingers. "If you were just in your actions, he'll see it."

"Would you?" I ask with a faint frown, my fingers hooking on hers with a light squeeze. "If you found out someone you'd trusted had been talking about you to someone who terrorized you and hurt you in ways most people couldn't even imagine let alone understand? If they enabled that person to keep a grasp on you after you'd tried to leave?"

I sigh as I let my fingers run over his, pulling my hand from his as I feel a rush of warmth wash over me. I hate the hot flashes.

"If what you said earlier, to Lju, was true, then yes." I nod, stretching my legs out as I run my hands over my face. "It didn't seem like you had a choice, and you did the best you could not to betray him. He'll understand."
