"Well, that's good, because I don't," I say lightly as I grab out a bottle of blood to go with my dinner before turning toward the kitchen table. "Let's just suffice it to say that I'm different than the Primes you might be used to."

I'm grateful to finally dig into my dinner, a contented sigh escaping me as I chew happily.

"So where are you from?" I ask curiously. "You smell cleaner than the people in the city, if that makes sense. Sometimes I think there's more fog than people walking around this place."

"South of the city," I answer lightly, "Amongst the farms there.

"And Lady Veretrum is the only one I've ever dealt with. My parents were farmers, I had no cause to enter the city."

I nod at the farmer connection, the smell of earth and water clinging to her skin making perfect sense. "What is Lady Veretrum like?" I ask curiously.

"Peculiar?" I offer lamely, "Out of touch? I'm not really sure. She's quite sharp, but she means well."

"Mm," I nod. "Sounds like a Prime, that's for sure." I feel a moment of discomfort as I watch Niamh working at the sink, a bit of guilt knotting in my stomach as she washes the dishes. "You know, you really don't have to do that tonight... I know it's late."

I hesitate as I set a plate off in the drain board, shrugging as I reach up to tuck hair behind my ear.

"No time like the present," I say as I pick up another plate to start scrubbing. "And once this is finished, I can bring some of the rubbish to the bins on my way out. I'll be out of your hair for the evening within an hour, if you need me to be."

"Actually..." I clear my throat uncomfortably as I shift a bit in my seat. "There is one thing I could use some help with before you go, if you wouldn't mind?"

"It's what I'm here for," I say as I glance back at him, "So, out with it."

I wince a bit as I get up to go to my desk. Grabbing the roll of tools there, I return to the kitchen as I search for the right tool.

"I'm having trouble getting my leg adjusted," I frown a bit as I hold the tool out for her. "I have to be wearing it to adjust it, but when I bend down, it alters my stance. I need someone to adjust it while I'm standing up..."

My hands are wrist deep in the sink of dirty dishes as I look back to see the tool he's offered, and I nod as I use the front of my dress to dry off before taking it.

"Ah, okay," I nod, "Just... This is one of those righty tighty, lefty loosey moments, isn't it?" I laugh a bit awkwardly, "Been reciting that since I was a kid. Don't get to use it often enough."

"Something like that, yeah," I laugh as I step back to lean against the table so I can unfasten my belt and remove my pants. "Just, uh... be careful? It's still really tender."

I'm taken aback as he maneuvers to drop his pants, my cheeks flushing as I step back to give him his room. I have to stop myself from staring at the prosthetic that makes up three-quarters of his right leg. What's left of his thigh appears red and swollen tucked into prosthetic, and I wince as I glance up at him.

"I'm sorry, what am I adjusting..?"

"Sorry, um," I can feel my face flush as I realize the immodesty I've shown. Avoiding eye contact, I maneuver my pants over my front to hide my leg as I lean down to point out the gear that needs adjusting.

"Loosen that bolt there slowly," I instruct before showing her the other spot she'll need to adjust. "Then turn that. Just don't loosen it too quickly or it'll come apart."

I nod my understanding as I look at the tool in my hands and kneel down in front of him. The mechanisms on the prosthetic leave my head spinning as I look it over curiously, moving to adjust the first bolt slowly.

"How much should I be twisting this one..?"

"Just until the other gear moves," I say, still avoiding looking at her knelt in front of me.

I try to keep my attention split between the two gears, twisting the first slowly until the second one shifts clumsily under my thumb. I can feel my eyes widen as I wonder if I've broken it, any adjustments ceasing as I glance up.

"It's moved."

"Now wind the other one left," I nod as I glance down to see what she's doing. I wince a little as I try to adjust my weight to be more evenly distributed, my leg twinging with the weight. "Could I..?" I ask as I hold my hand toward her shoulder for support.

"Uhm," I look up at him, "Of course, go ahead." I remark plainly, trying to keep my eyes on the piece in my hand as I move it gingerly to the left.

44 Re: An exchange of goods on Wed May 11, 2016 1:55 am

I wince again as I put the weight on my bad leg, my lips clamping shut as I grit my teeth. It takes a few seconds of her adjusting the gear before I squeeze her shoulder lightly. "Go back half a turn?" I instruct before nodding. "Okay, you can tighten the other bolt now, that's good."

45 Re: An exchange of goods on Wed May 11, 2016 1:56 am

I tense under his weight as I tighten the initial bolt, still trying to figure out exactly what I'd been adjusting before I hand him his tool back.

"Does it hurt?"

"The leg?" I ask as I tuck the tool back into the roll before going to put my pants back on. "Constantly. But now my hips should feel better. Thank you."

I offer a smile as I rise to my feet, quickly returning to the sink to leave him his privacy.

"Of course, it's what I'm here for." I say as I cut the water back on. "Now eat. I'll be done with these dishes in no time."

"Do you think you'll be coming by tomorrow?" I ask as I return to my seat so I can finish eating.

"I'd imagine so," I nod as I get back into the rhythm of the dishes. "Dishes and refuse aside, your place is littered with laundry. If you like, I can take some home with my tonight so I can tend to it there. I was always partial to line-dried garments in the spring."

"I would like that, thank you," I nod as I smile over at her. "I admit, I kind of miss being able to dry my clothes out on the line. Anything dried outside here is instantly dirty again and wreaks of the fog."
