"Ah," I nod, dropping my head back on the bed again. "Yeah, I hear that a lot. Usually, though, people say they couldn't leave Skycrest because of the war. I thought that's what you meant when you said it'd break you. It's been harsh for a lot of outsiders who've settled here."

"It was hard, definitely. I've been trying to get that old mask fixed for months. If I wasn't laughed out of the shop, I was given a quote that was horribly inflated." I frown, "I don't know what's crawled up everyone's asses here, but there is some very real animosity regarding the professions."

"Mmm, yeah," I nod, frowning faintly. "It's a shame, really. They're such radically different schools of thought... we could learn so much from each other. Witches see what's already within something, and techs see what could be. The potential if the two are combined is limitless... but we act like the two things can't exist harmoniously, like they contradict one another. How tragic would it be if that were true?"

"It's not something I understand at all," I shrug, "Back home, it wasn't uncommon for the trades to mix or work together. I honestly can't figure out why it's so bad here in the city.

"But it's not something I like to dwell on." I sigh, stretching my legs out a bit towards the floor as I adjust the blanket over me. "Would you like some tea? I could use some to warm up with, the heat in this building is shit."

"Sure," I nod, smiling gratefully as I prop my head on my hand. "Richard says it's like this because we aren't involved in the war. Conflict forces allegiances on the surface because people are stronger together. Pettiness is a privilege and a weakness for the ignorant and the sheltered. People can't afford that kind of nonsense on the surface, and up here you'll notice all the most powerful have risen above it."

"Is that a pun?" I ask lamely as I rise to my feet, dropping the blanket over his legs as I step over him.

"Always," I grin in amusement. "You might say puns are the highest form of humor... okay, that one was lame."

"A bit, yeah." I chuckle, setting up the kettle to boil before taking my tin of various teas off of a shelf to return to the bedside.

"What sort of tea do you want? It's one of the few things I still splurge on, so I've got plenty of variety."

"Ooh," I raise an eyebrow curiously as I prop myself up on my elbow to hold a hand out for the tin. "I'll be honest, I usually drink coffee, so I don't know." I take a moment to shuffle through the various teas, smelling each one as I move them around in their compartments. "Hmm, can I try the one with the chamomile and the mint and... are those rose hips? Yeah, that one."

"Of course," I nod, taking the tin back as I head towards the kitchenette to start assembling the tea balls. "It might have the opposite effect of your coffee, though. Mixed with a warm meal, should I be worried about you making it back to your home tonight? It'll be late."

"I'll be fine," I yawn to the opposite effect before waving a hand at her as if it'll be more convincing. "I live just down the road, and the shop is already locked up for the night. It's not as though this is my first time going thirty-some hours without sleep either, so yeah, I'll be alright."

His yawn is infectious, and I can feel the mask stretch and strain as I yawn widely.

"The dough should be close to done, if you could grab it for me?" I say as I gesture towards the window, setting the two mugs I'd prepared for tea off to the back of the counter so I can roll out the dough.

"You said you live just down the road? Really?"

"Mm-hmm," I nod as I reach up to grab the dough before sitting up so I can get to my feet. "It's a quiet little spot, I like it."

"Quiet in this city?" I chuckle, "How far is a just down the road to you?"

"Well, it's on this street," I say, grinning evasively. "And may I remind you of which shop I own?"

"I didn't even know your shop existed until last week, so I don't think you've got quite the notoriety you think you do." I laugh, rolling out the dough and setting to work making the kolaches as the water starts to flirt with boiling on the stove.

"There's that chair a bit to your right," I say as I glance back at him, "You can knock all the shit on the floor, I'm too tired to care."

"How about I place it nicely on the floor?" I offer as I do just that, taking care to stack it neatly beside the wall. "Sheesh, I know you're foreign, but there's no need to live like a heathen."

"This entire room is hardly big enough for me to lay down in, and I have to piss and shower in a shared room down the hall - I think living like a heathen might be an improvement." I retort, grabbing the kettle off the burner once it starts to whistle.

"You got me there," I sigh as I take a seat in the chair, a pained groan threatening to breathe past my lips as my joints and muscles protest. I'm starting to get to that achy exhausted state - joy. "So what are you making anyway? I don't recognize the smell."

"Poppy seed kolaches, and when they're about done, I'm going to make some eggs to go with them." I explain, stuffing each kolache before folding it closed and setting it on the pan I'd prepared earlier.

"Holy hell, you really went all outhe, didn't you? " I ask with wide eyes as I try to subtly slip out of the chair and back onto the more comfortable bed. "No wonder you only had half a copper for a radio."

I glance at him timely before laughing, shaking my head as I go back to piecing together the pastries.

"I was going to make it all in the morning so it'd be ready whenever you showed up. I wasn't expecting you tonight."

"Yeah, I felt bad for keeping you waiting, so I just stayed up to finish the collar," I admit a bit sheepishly as I try to disguise another yawn. Now that I'm back on the bed, my body seems to ache with gratitude as I pull a pillow under my cheek and curl up against it. "I'm glad I did though, kolashes and eggs sound amazing."

"I haven't had these in years," I say offhandedly, setting the last of the kolaches on the pan so I can tuck it away to rise again. "My, uh-" I hesitate, tapping the counter a bit before turning back to face him at the bed.

"My mom used to make them for breakfast all the time, I always loved them."

My head tilts as I pick up on the subtle increase in her breathing, her heartbeat jumping to match it as she backpedals. My curiosity piqued, I twist a bit on the bed so I can hear her better.

"Your mom, huh?" I ask with interest. "Is that the only family you had? Just you and your mom?"
