"Ah, no," I shake my head, ducking before the fridge to dig out whatever else I'll need to make the eggs. "I had both parents, and a brother. Have, really. They're not dead, just back in Reach's End or Pallhagan."

"Ah, well, that's good," I nod, still curious to know what had put her on edge earlier, but unsure what questions to ask to get there. "Anyone else?"

"No," I respond swiftly, setting everything up on the counter before sinking into the chair he'd cleared a moment before.

"Okay," I respond, not sounding very convinced as I raise an eyebrow at her.

"Oh! Your tea's ready, I nearly forgot." I laugh as I bounce back up, grabbing the two mugs of tea and sniffing at them before stepping over to hand Marnin his.

"The kolaches only need to rise another 15 minutes, then I can cook it all. We should be eating within the hour." I say as I ensure he's gotten his tea before stepping back to sink into the chair. "You going to make it that long?" I ask teasingly.

"Stamina is my middle name," I smirk as I sit up slightly to take a sip of the tea. "Actually, it's Matthew, but let's just keep that between us."

"Mine's Zenya." I pause, frowning a bit as I look down at my collar, "No, it isn't. It's K-seenya. Ksenija. We might have to work out some of pronunciations, I would like to be able to say my own name."

"Yeah, that'll be a fun project," I nod in agreement as I sit up to drink my tea more easily. "I'll have to make myself more familiar with the dialect first. I haven't worked with much Pallhaganian linguistics. It'll be interesting."

"I'd be of more help if I could," I shrug lamely, "And I don't want to sound ungrateful. Looba Zenya Petrovic is more than I thought I'd be able to say." I add with a grin, adjusting my mask as I pull one of the nearby drawers open to find a straw so I can enjoy some of my tea while it's still warm.

"You'll have to write that down for me," I laugh as I try to repeat it with an appropriate accent. "Tomorrow, I'll go to the guild hall to get some sound reels so I can familiarize myself with how to say it."

"My first name is a mess, I'd be impressed if you worked that one out for the vox unit. It's all in the mouth, how it's said. Just after the L, with your tongue still behind your front teeth, you have to pronounce the j with your cheeks. Like Y right after the L." I explain as I set my tea down and set up the stove to heat up.

"And the middle name, in Reach's End, everyone combined the K and S to be an X, but it's not." I continue, sighing softly as I sit back again with my tea, "Pallhagian is such a fun language to speak, I miss it sometimes...

"But, your name? Marnin Matthew." I say it with a grin, my own hushed voice just barely audible  before I push the mask back into it's place. "The vox says that perfectly, doesn't it?"

"I left the accent off the first name, actually," I laugh lightly. "Mostly for my own sanity. I could never tell when my mother was calling my name or saying good morning to someone. One of the hazards of having a mother from the North, I guess. She's always talking gibberish or yelling at one of her kids."

I can hear the faint buzz of the collar as I silently mouth his name. Marnin. I can't help but giggle as I stir my tea.

"So is your name an ode to your conception, then?" I ask, snickering to myself - all too tickled with the joke.

"Ewww," I laugh, shaking my head violently. "Gods, I hope not! That's horrifying! No, she always tells me it's because I was her little sunshine, the light after a long night, and other horrendously cheesy mom stuff. Ironically, of course, I was born in the dead of the night on one of the longest nights of the year - probably some ill omen hinting at the fact that I'd spend my life in the dark, but I'm not superstitious so eh.

"Personally, I just think she wanted to call me Marnin Matthew Mercer because it's one great big alliteration," I sigh sadly. "Kids loved going MMM at me when I was growing up. I'm not sure why that's meant to be insulting, but I got into a lot of fist fights over it."

"Well, the name suits you." I respond as I set my tea down and lean over in my seat to open the oven and shove the kolaches in.

"Marnin Matthew Mercer." I say it again, groaning a bit as I stretch before getting up to start on the eggs. "Not a cross syllable in the whole thing. I think she knew you'd be such a gentleman."

I snort at that, rolling my eyes despite the grin and the faint blush warming my cheeks. "Well, she's certainly not unhappy with how I turned out," I sigh thoughtfully. "To hear her tell it, her boys could do no wrong. I wouldn't let her fool anyone though, that woman chased us around with a wooden spoon because we were such rambunctious children. Bless her heart, I don't know she survived three boys."

"That's the thing about mums, though, isn't it?" I respond as I rinse off the used skillet yet again before checking the array of spices laid out. "They could survive just about anything for their children, whether they want to or not."

"Yeah," I frown sadly, trying not to linger on that kind of thought. "What about you? Have you ever been a parent?"

"Ever been a parent." I repeat the question, doing my utmost to keep my focus on the task at hand as I shrug.

"Isn't the point of it that once you do it, you're branded for life. You don't stop being a parent just because you were bad at it or you didn't like it." I ramble, grateful for the vox's relative lack of emotion as I reach up to rub at my nose before it can threaten to start running. "It's something you either are, or aren't. It's like a scar, that way..."

Sighing heavily, I crack the first egg into the skillet. "No, parenthood isn't for me."

I frown quietly as she talks, deciding not to say anything to contradict her as I nod in silence instead. I can tell she's lying - her heart rate, her muffled sniffles, the stiffness in her body... but the sadness is just as palpable, and it's not something I need to question.

"I had a little girl," I admit after a moment. "Well... she wasn't mine, at least not genetically. But I was there when she was born. I was meant to be her godfather, but when her mum died during the delivery, it was just me and her da.

"Things between me and him had always been a little... questionable?" I admit, shifting in my seat a little uncomfortably. "And after his wife died, it only got more confusing. We wound up living together for five years, raising this little girl together... or rather, I was raising this little girl, and Jonathan just sort of spiraled downhill.

"This was back before relationships like that were legal, though, so I couldn't really go to anyone about what was happening," I frown as I pick at the fabric of my pants. "It took Richard stepping in to fix things, in his I'll take care of this kind of way, which usually means I'll get rid of them so I don't have to share you. So Cliodhna went to live with her grandmother who doesn't want an 'invalid' around her grandchild, and Jonathan was deported back to Wells Island."

I let out a heavy sigh as I take a long drink of my tea and shrug.

"So, I guess parenthood isn't really for me, either," I smile faintly. "Too messy."

"No, it's fine." I respond a bit guiltily, looking back towards him as I crack the next set of eggs into the pan. "I wasn't lying earlier when I said I haven't had anyone to talk to in years. You could ramble off about anything, I'd like to hear it.

"It's just-" I sigh, dropping the shells into the trash as I lean against the counter. "Kids aren't something I like to talk about."

"I can respect that," I nod in quiet understanding as I take another drink of my tea to disguise the painful swallowing of emotion trying to constrict my throat. "So tell me something else?" I ask after clearing my throat, my voice coming out more clearly now that we've left the subject behind.

"What sort of things do you like to make?" I ask curiously. "I tried to get a feel for the magic you'd locked in that stone you gave me, but I'm not very versed in magic and it was unlike anything I've ever worked with."

"Uhm," I laugh softly to myself, not finding the new topic all that different from the last as I lean over to check the kolaches. Almost done.

"I used to make Dream Drops, and the sort. Memory and sensory charms, ironically enough."
