"Look, I'm used to plants on the ground," I say firmly, a grin still managing to trickle into my tone as I run my hand over the cover of the book in my lap, "Plants up here are entirely different, minus a few that can live anywhere. I had to study, before I realized that horticulture is not a cheap trade up here.

"I actually got these when I first hit the city, and I don't think I've used them more than a handful of times. I thought you might get better use out of them than I did."

"Will you read them to me sometime?" I ask hopefully, a faint blush coming to my cheeks as I ask. I don't know if it's because I'm blind or what, but there's something oddly intimate about having someone read to you... the question feels almost inappropriate.

"Well, I thought I'd be reading them to you today but we don't seem to be doing the gardening today." I shrug, reaching over to put the books back near the bag. "But I checked and most of the plants in your sunroom are in here, so it should come in really handy."

"Oh, really?" I ask with genuine surprise and newfound interest that has me pulling the book from where she's set it. There's more purpose to what I'm doing as I open it this time, my fingers tracing across the page slowly. Maybe if I concentrate hard enough, I'll be able to feel the sheen of ink set into the heavy paper.

"What about the one by the window?" I ask with a pinched frown as I turn a few more pages into the book before trying again to feel the words on the page. "The one that's wilting?"

"Hmm?" I frown, glancing towards the window. I don't even have to get up, but I do anyway so I can take a closer look.

"It's root rot," I say as I get closer. "Your pot isn't draining enough water. And given that it's a pothos, I'd wager it's probably rootbound, too."

"Well, shit," I frown as I turn my head toward her direction, my fingers still trying to feel their way across the pages of the book in my lap. "I really need to get this kind of information before I impulsively buy things. I didn't even know what it was called."

"It's actually a pretty basic plant on the ground, usually pretty hardy. Honestly, I'm surprised you've managed to muck it up, but it could've been like this for months. These plants just refuse to die." I say fondly as I let my fingers tray through the leaves and across the small vines stretching across the window sill.

"If you have another pot downstairs, we can transfer it and clean the roots out a bit. It'll be perked up by next weekend."

"Thank you," I smile before sighing as I give up my attempt to read and put the book aside. "Honestly, I always forget about this one up here. And then I feel guilty so I think I over water it trying to compensate."

"Find one of those pots that drains into a saucer," I say, picking the put up to inspect it, "So you can just check the saucer every few days. Probably be easier for you."

"Yeah, that makes sense," I admit as I get to my feet to come over to her, my fingers bumping into her arms as I reach up to feel for the pot. "Honestly, it had a nicer pot than this. But I bumped it off the sill when I went to water it, and it broke. I thought putting it in a smaller pot would keep me from knocking it over when I looked for it."

"You can hit a button and feel out your entire house, but you can't manage a plant on a window sill?" I ask with a light laugh, glancing up at him as I help guide the pot towards his hands. I let his hands replace mine, my own fingers smoothing over his to ensure his grip before I lean back against the window comfortably.

"Besides, that'd be sort of like me shoving you in a box too small for your body just because it was easier for me. Plants are alive, and they need a bit more finesse than constricting their roots."

"This is why I've asked for your help," I laugh as I adjust my hold on the pot so I can feel the leaves of the ivy. "You have no idea how long I've been looking for someone to help with this. Every witch with a shop within a twenty mile radius knows the tap of my cane on the sidewalk, and they come running out of their shops to tell me off before I even have a chance to drop a plant on their counters now."

"That's probably because it's a touch heartbreaking to see plants in this shape," I laugh softly, reaching up to tuck of a bit of the vine into the pot so we can carry it downstairs. "And, you know. We're notoriously rude."

"That and I kind of bump into everything when I come into their shops," I laugh sheepishly. "Half the time, I don't know if I'm genuinely doing it because I'm blind, because I'm trying to be as pitiful as possible to avoid being hexed, or if it's because I have been hexed and I get nervous anticipating it happening again. Either way, they really don't like me."

"No," I indulge, "They're mean to you..? Have they met you?

I grin as we head for the hall, my pace slow as I linger at his side, "Well, don't you worry about being hexed. It's not even something I can do anymore if I wanted to, and I happen to find you a little charming, so you've got that in your favor."

"Finally!" I breathe and enormous, exaggerated sigh of relief. "I knew someone would see how amazingly charming I am if I just kept it up!"

"Keep it up, and I'll hex you in Pahgish!" I say quickly, "I can't do much, but I can still manage the one for nose hair."

I nearly drop the plant reaching up up protect my nose, my eyes going wide. "There's a spell for that?" I ask with some alarm. "Fuck me, you witches come up with some of the most unusual punishments."

I giggle as I reach over to take the plant from him, ushering him on ahead of me out the door.

"It just makes it grow really thick and fast for like a day. It's really common amongst kids, and because of that, the word for it is stupid simple. Like I said - One of the only words I can still manage."

"I never once thought to myself when I was a kid, you know what would be hilarious?" I snap my fingers before pointing at her. "Nose hair. Just nose hair for days.

"Your bunch are weird," I laugh before shrugging. "Now, I  did glue Richard's hand to his nipple... and I've cut his hair in his sleep. Let me tell you, Lju, there is nothing funnier than a naked teenager chasing you with one hand glued to his tit while he cries and screams obscenities at you because he can't get it off. And the trail of hair falling off behind him? Mum made  him clean it up, too. Man, he was so pissed."

Laughing thickly, I hug the plant to my front as I follow him.

"You're a rotten brother, and I suddenly understand why he's mean to your friends."

"Oh no, he earned that!" I say quickly, a note of outrage creeping into my voice even after all these years. "He told Abby Jennings I still wet the bed and slept with a white noise bear. She was my date for the school dance, and I wound up going to pick her up only to have her and her new boyfriend laugh me off her front porch. Worst night of my life... bastards lucky I didn't glue it to his pecker."

"You two deserve each other." I shake my head, rolling my eyes as we walk through the foyer into the sunroom. "Where do you keep your soil?"

"Under the counter over here," I respond as I go to fetch it along with a few pots that might work. "There are a few others that could probably use a transplant, too."

"So what exactly was the project you needed help with, for that other job?" I ask, laying out the various posts and such on the table as I get oriented. "Or was this all a ploy to get me to do your gardening for you?"
