"Maybe he's genuinely concerned and just shit at showing it." I shrug with a weak laugh, reaching over to grab a chip before I continue folding away.

"What was it at your shop, anyway? Was anything stolen?"

"The display outside was trashed," I sigh as I fidget with the chip in my hand. "And the clock wall inside. I knew who did it as soon as I arrived. He started out really cocky, and then sort of deflated when he saw me.

"New neighbor," I clarify. "Not sure he knew I was blind. But I showed up without my glasses, no shoes, and looking like shit warmed over. I think he felt like a dick once he saw me."

"Is your shop still a mess then..?" I frown up at him, the dragon forgotten as soon as I've creased the last bit of wing.

"Richard fixed it," I respond flatly. "Like he fixes everything. You walk in and you'd never know anything was ever broken."

"But... Isn't that a good thing..?" I frown a bit, confused by his seeming annoyance with that fact. "I mean, having your shop cleaned up?"

256 Re: Where Truth Lies on Fri Nov 25, 2016 1:32 am

"Yeah... no... I mean, I don't know?!" I shake my head starkly. "No, it's not a good thing. Not like that. Most people have something happen, and it leaves a mark, you know?? They spend a few days cleaning up the mess.

"But with Richard around?" I scoff, scowling as I crumble a chip spitefully. "It's all wiped away in a matter of hours. Nothing is ever wrong. No one is ever sad or sick or broken. Everything and everyone is just perfect, our image always pristine when it's just fucking not. Not really.

"I'd just like to be allowed to not be okay sometimes, you know?" I sigh heavily. "But as it is, I'm just another broken clock to him. Like my display, like my mum... swept under the rug and erased."

My heart drops as he speaks, my high twisting painfully with my guilt as I shove the dragon across the table towards him.

"I never know what to say in these moments," I say quietly, frowning as my fingers stretch out to brush against the edge of his hands, "So I'm just going to hold your hands and tell you I'm sorry, because I am..."

Something like a laugh or a sigh escapes me as I cup her hand between mine for a moment, my fingers tracing soft circles across her skin.

"Let's eat, yeah?" I offer after a moment as I smile and bring her hand to my lips to kiss it gently. "You've lost like eight pounds since I saw you last, and that just won't do."

"What did you say?" I ask with a laugh, looking up at him as I squeeze his hand to prevent him from standing, "Did you just tell me how many pounds I've lost..?"

260 Re: Where Truth Lies on Fri Nov 25, 2016 2:02 am

"It's an estimate, shut up," I laugh as I squeeze her wrist. "You've lost enough for your wrists to be bonier than they were two weeks ago. And your mask has a little bit of a gap at the hollow of your cheeks. So more than five, but probably less than ten because you're already a tiny little thing."

"I am missing part of my face, you know." I argue lamely, pulling my hand from his as I shoo him off towards the grill. "And you... look..." I start, my thought trailing off as I watch him as though something will come to mind.

"You look much less intimidating in regular clothes, you know."

"I look intimidating in other clothes?" I ask with a laugh as I glance back at her before opening the grill to check the food.

"Well... less intimidating." I correct him, my eyebrows pinching a bit as I blush at the admission. "You don't look like you're a big guy when you're all done up at your shop or dressed for company. But you're kind of a big bloke."

264 Re: Where Truth Lies on Fri Nov 25, 2016 2:27 am

"Would you believe that I sort of do that intentionally?" I ask hesitantly. "The shop is sort of in a bad area, if you hadn't noticed. And there are two kinds of criminal in this city.

"The cowards and the thugs," I explain as I start removing the sausages from the grill before turning the corn. "Thugs tend to leave you alone if you look weak and pathetic. So I try to look like the blindest, weakest lamest pray they'll ever meet.

"Then when they turn out to be cowards, I break their fucking teeth in because who the hell mugs a blind guy with a cane and a fucking sweater vest and glasses?"

I laugh as I cross my arms on the table, against them as I yawn softly.

"I find looking like a monster from a children's book helps, too." I grin, "And if not, I usually have a knife on my belt. At least when I'm out hocking."

266 Re: Where Truth Lies on Fri Nov 25, 2016 2:35 am

"Yeah, I imagine it probably gets pretty dangerous walking around with all that stuff on you," I frown a bit as I feel around for the package of bread I'd brought out for the sausages.

"If you ever want company or anything, let me know?" I offer as I bring over a plate for her. "Corn'll be done in a minute."

"I'm a spry little thing," I say, taking the plate and twisting it a bit to better get at the sausage so I can start pinching it into smaller pieces. "I've honestly never been bothered. I think I unsettle people."

"I'm glad," I say as I take a bite and then put a hand over my mouth to talk around my food. "Not that you unsettle people. That you aren't bothered, I mean."

I grin as I start pinching bits of bread and combing them with sausage before popping it in my mouth.

"I don't mind unsettling people," I shrug, "Fear is somehow better than disgust, I think."

"You sound like Richard," I laugh as I take another bite of my hot dog. "Except he says it's better than being loved or pitied or something, I don't know. Fear is a weapon, basically. A weapon, armor... whatever you want it to be."

"You talk about him a lot." I say as I pop another bite in my mouth, pausing to chew before I realize we have nothing to drink out here. "Bring him up in conversation, I mean.

"Are you thirsty, I think I'm going to go find something to drink."

"Yeah, sure," I nod, not really addressing what she'd said as I find myself frowning at my food thoughtfully.

I get clumsily up from the table, heading into the house to grab a jug of tea and several glasses. Making my way back outside, I frown slightly as I notice Marnin seems just as sadly introspective as he was when I went in.

"I got some cold tea," I say, holding tightly to the jug and glasses as I come up to stand beside him, "But I'm afraid I'll drop it, if you'd help..?"

"Hmm? Oh!" I hum before what she's said registers. I drop my food back onto the plate before twisting to grab the jug from her slipping grasp.

"I didn't realize you'd meant to get all of this," I admit with a frown. "I would have come in and helped if I'd known."

"This seemed like a better idea than trying to pour it myself..." I say with a frown, unloading the glasses onto the table before looking down at them. "Seemed like a better idea... Probably wasn't."
