"Fuck them," I say roughly, "Taunting me, putting a knife to my throat!?"

My jaw tenses as I look at Lavellan, "I shouldn't have gone out without you, you're right - But they shouldn't have thought they could come after me, either."

"Fair enough," I sigh as I grab the first aid kit from my bag so I can clean the cuts on her neck. "I agree, you shouldn't have gone out without me." I say as I set to work scrubbing none too gently at the cuts on her neck, frowning at the ghastly looking wounds.

"But I am pleased you were able to do what you did," I admit reluctantly as I glance at her. "Though, I'd be more impressed if you managed to put him back together again."

"All the king's horses," I remark lamely, wincing as he drags the dampened cloth against my neck. The pain has turned into a burning throb, and I grimace as he works.

"You're lucky this wasn't deeper," I frown as I put the cloth down and open up a small box, looking through it hesitantly. "This... might hurt a bit," I admit as I glance back at her. "I'm going to make a paste. It'll help pull the skin back together. You'll have to keep it on under a bandage for a little bit, but it should heal it. But it smells terrible and it doesn't feel nice."

"Will it be like spikes in my arms?" I ask half-heartedly, raising an eyebrow as I look down at him before nodding my understanding.

"Honestly, it's my fault." I say a bit tensely, already feeling ashamed of the encounter without further digging my grave. "I was wrestling the knife from him, and the repulsion spell sort of..." I shrug, raising a hand to imitate the motion before dropping it back to hold my pained ribs as I take short breaths. "I don't even know how it all happened, it's like as soon as I realized I was trapped I just stopped thinking and all that came to mind was being stuck in that alley with Marnin.

"It wasn't going to happen again."

"You did well, Ljuba," I say quietly as I apply some of the paste to a piece of gauze before nodding for her to look up so I can place it over the gash on her neck. "Don't be so hard on yourself. That's what I'm here for."

Inhaling sharply, I grit my teeth against the stinging burn of the ointment, my hand catching in his shirt as it squeezes against the uncomfortable sensation.

"Be careful, please," I say tensely as she clutches at my shirt, my shoulders tensing a bit at the proximity. "I didn't put very much salve on."

My fingers extend to graze the skin beneath the fabric before my hands withdraw entirely, instead finding comfort in themselves as my fingers tangle together in my lap.

"Right, sorry," I breathe evenly, trying to ignore the burning as he finishes the dressing.

"You should take another bath," I say after I finish wrapping a light bandage around her neck. "I can't imagine it's healthy to have corpse dust smeared in all your wounds."

"Just the one wound," I remark lightly as he withdraws his hands so I can drop my chin back, wincing slightly at the pain before I glance towards the tub, the twist in my neck adding to my discomfort.

"Do we have to leave after?" I ask as I look back at Lavellan.

I pause to consider that before sighing. "It might be wise," I admit with a nod. "But let's not hurry. If someone is missing them, we don't want to draw attention to ourselves rushing off in the wee hours of the morning."

"So when?" I frown, watching as Lavellan rises to step aside as I get to my feet.

"We'll leave before sunrise," I respond with a frown. "So get cleaned up, try to get some rest, and I'll wake you when it's time to go."

I nod as I head for the bathroom, pausing for a moment as I hit the door to look back at him.

"I'm not leaving without that bee." I say firmly.

My nails click against the doorframe as I watch him for a moment, sighing before I turn back to the bathroom, the door shutting behind me.

143 Re: The Failings of Time on Fri Feb 10, 2017 9:14 pm

As soon as the door has shut, I sigh heavily, my eyes closing as I take a long moment to find my composure. Between frayed nerves and the agitation of having my sleep interrupted, my mood is quickly souring. I like to think that I've been patient up to this point; understanding of the fact that people tend to grieve differently than I do. But my patience is quickly waning, particularly now that we have something that belonged to Marnin floating Maker knows where.

Pulling my hair back up into a tight bun, I put the rest of my clothes back on and try to make myself look as presentable as possible. In all honesty, it's a little unnerving how easy it is for me to fall into a Guardian role, but I know I have to be nothing short of convincing as I step out into the hallway to lock the door with a gloved hand.

It's not easy resisting the urge to use my magic to make my presence more foreboding to deter the curious looks of what few stragglers there are left in the bar. Avoiding engaging with any of them, I make my way back out to the van to search for Ljuba's confounded bee. I tear the van apart in search of it, my frustration growing when I crawl back out without the stupid contraption.

Cursing to myself, I make my way back toward the inn, my eyes trained on the ground as I search for it. Once I'm back inside, I shift gears as I notice just how many tables there are in the tavern. Of course there are countless people here. We're in a gate town.

Trying my best to maintain my composure, I wander up to the bar to order a water. I get a quizzical look from the bartender before I offer a sheepish smile as I shrug. "Guardians and their liquor," I say lightly. "Never a good mix."

The bartender nods, his expression softening with understanding as he gets the glass of water I'd ordered. I can't help but notice that he grabs down one of the nicer glasses, taking an extra moment to make sure that it's clean before he fills it with the chilled water from a tap under the counter.

"Thank you," I nod as I go to grab my coinpurse, the man immediately shaking his head at me.

"Your coins no good here, sir," he smiles. "Drink up. We're glad to have you home from your travels."

"I- thank you," I respond a little hesitantly before holding my glass up to him and taking a sip. "I don't suppose you've seen a bee around here, have you?" I ask after a moment. "A little mechanical one... my charge misplaced it, and it has some sentimental value..."

"Like a little clockwork thing?" he asks, nodding as he turns to retrieve a box from under the bar. "Yeah, we got one of those. 'nother Guardian turned it in earlier this evening, found it on the floor by the door."

"Oh, thank the Maker," I breathe in relief, the peculiar sentiment coming strangely to my lips as I try to keep up appearances. "I don't suppose you caught his name, so I can thank him?"

"Her name was Maven, I believe," he smiles as he hands me the bee.

"Maven," I nod as I repeat the name while tucking the bee in my pocket. "I'll be sure to give her my thanks. In the meantime, I don't suppose the kitchens are still open, are they?"

It isn't long after I've gotten back into the bath that I hear Lavellan slipping out of the room just on the other side of the door, a tightness settling into my chest at his lingering disdain. Seeming to upset Lavellan is nothing new, but with him being the only person I have anymore, it stings a little deeper than usual.

Washing quickly, I dry and redress in clean clothes, busying myself in the bedroom by sorting the dirtied and clean clothes before folding them so the soiled garments won't mix too much with the clean. After that, I find myself just sitting on the bed, wondering where Lavellan got off to. I know better than to wander off after him, though, and I finally give up before cutting down the lights and crawling into my bed, the dim lights from the bathroom just enough illumination to guide my hand as it finds his lock of hair in the box at my bedside. I tuck it into my palm as I curl under my blankets, my eyes closing as I try to focus on the connection.

I spend the next several hours eating and chatting with the bartender, getting a feel for how much the area has changed in the years that I've been gone. His assumption that I've been away traveling makes it much easier to ask these questions, the man happily divulging everything he knows about recent events surrounding the capital. I even manage to catch a glimpse of the new crests the Guardians are using, making a point to jot it down inside a small journal in my pocket.

The bartender's shift is ending when I finally get up to return to the room, a tray of breakfast meats and biscuits in hand. Ljuba is fast asleep in her bed, my box of trinkets laid out on the table beside her. Frowning, I set the tray of food down on the table before carefully putting the things in the box away, noting that the lock of hair is no where to be found. Glancing at Ljuba, I close the box and then lay a gentle hand on her side, shaking her lightly to wake her up.

"I brought food," I say when she wakes.

I wake easily, his hand on my side coaxing me conscious before he ever has a chance to jostle me lightly. I blink through the dreariness of the light sleep I did manage as I twist to sit up, looking between the tray of food and Lavellan as I nod.

"Hmm, thank you." I say groggily, adjusting myself to sit at the head of the bed as I adjust the blankets over my front.

Confusion settles on my features as I look at the box before nodding my understanding, still in the process of waking up as I hold a hand up to offer him the still-pristine lock of hair.

"Don't let it go to your head," I remark, a mild tone of teasing in my voice as I drop the hair into the box and sink back against the headboard, "I fell asleep trying something."

"I d'know," I shrug, leaning over to peer at the food he brought. "I fell asleep."
