"On the upside," I shrug as I return my gaze to the road, our speed barely faster than the pedestrians surrounding us. "A lot of new witches who come here had... habits. Withdrawals will lend to our cover."

"That's lucky," I laugh weakly, looking over at him as I nod. "It'll draw less attention tomorrow when I'm puking on the side of the road."

"It really will," I say with a laugh as I glance at her sympathetically. "Honestly, it won't be at all out of place... one of the few bunk mates I had growing up was this nine year old girl who looked like death. I learned later that she'd been taking opiates since she was seven to try to stop the voices in her head. It took a Guardian finding her to finally stop them, and bring her in from the streets.

"It wasn't unusual to see people like her after that," I say lightly. "Something about witches and addiction go hand in hand."

"I never used until I needed it," I remark, my eyes closing as my forehead rests against the cool window. "Hardly drank until after Bea was born and I realized I wasn't cut out to be a mother."

Sighing, I pick my head up just enough so I can draw in the fog on the window. "I can relate to wanting to drown things out, though. It wasn't long before I was doubling or tripling doses just to stop the dreams. Not that it worked for long."

"I had a drinking problem for a long time," I admit quietly, my gloved fingers drumming absently on the steering wheel. "And an anger problem... the drinking really didn't help the anger issues..."

"It never does, does it?" I sigh softly, still staring out the window listlessly. "You come out the other end worse than you went in, if you come out at all." I add a bit thickly.

"I spent a long time wishing they'd have just killed me, it'd have been the more merciful punishment."

"Life is pain," I offer with a lame shrug. "I wish I had better answers for you, but in all the decades I've lived, I've only found that things really don't get better. You just find new ways to adapt, new distractions and lies to tell yourself to keep going. And that's about all you can do - find more good things than bad to convince yourself it's all worth it.

"So far, you're off to a lousy start," I say with a teasing smile. "But you're in good company."

"You're lucky the urge to hit you pales compared to the fear of what might happen if I do." I retort as I glance his way with a slight smirk.

"So! Six days?" I continue with a heavy exhale, sitting up in my seat stiffly as I curl my legs back underneath me again. "Six days of driving? Or six days of stopping in little towns for proper food and leg stretching and... I don't know, not driving."

"We'll be doing the latter," I respond dryly as I glance at her, shaking my head. "Not for the sake of comfort, though. We need information if we're going to sneak into the Grand Circle. And you need to brush up on your skills because I'm certain they'll be needed if we're going to get out again."

"You want me to use my magic on people here?" I groan as I twist in my seat to face him. "That sounds like a really stupid plan."

"Not just the people here," I say as I raise an eyebrow at her. "I want you to use your magic on the most powerful witches and wizards and magicians in the entire kingdom. All at once."

"You think you're funny, you're not." I chide as I look at him seriously, the skin on the back of my neck feeling tight as I get a sick feeling in my gut.

"You're serious."

"You have six days to prepare," I say as I set a serious gaze on her. "And, no pressure, but if you fail... you'll be forced into servitude, and I'll be killed."

"You're a weaver," I frown. "You make people see things, or, more importantly, not see them. We need to get in and get out again without anyone remembering we were ever there."

"No, see-" I frown, "I did single individuals, with charms! It requires some form of contact, I can't just walk into a room and-"

I wince as I look at the floor, shaking my head. "These Chantry people, you think they won't have safeguards up for people like me? Weavers are a dime a dozen in a place as thickly populated as what you're talking about, they probably HAVE weavers there to ward people like me off!"

37 Re: The Failings of Time on Thu Feb 02, 2017 8:50 pm

"That's what Guardians are for," I respond before shaking my head. "But weavers are rare here. Guardians can damper magic, but the have to know they're facing it. Weavers are hard to bring in because of what they can do with their gifts. What few come here come willingly, and even when they do, their skills are underappreciated because the Chantry looks down on it as morally wrong - so they're never utilized.

"But you're not limited by such illusions of morality," I smile slightly. "Your potential is limitless."

Sighing, I turn down the radio before reaching down between the seat to pull a small box from my bag. Handing it to her, I nod for her to open it up.

"You say you need contact with people to weave something for them. There are bits and pieces in that box that I use for making dolls. Find something, a clipping of hair or one of the less unsavory bits, and see if you can get a read on who they belong to. If you can, then this just might be doable."

I'm practically trembling as I take the box, shaking my head listlessly as I look down at it.

"You don't understand, Lavellan, with a charm, I have time to craft it, to make it real. To just weave on a whim like this, it's not guaranteed. I could miss something, I could fuck something up. I haven't even done this aside from the handful of times with you in the last two years!"

39 Re: The Failings of Time on Thu Feb 02, 2017 9:59 pm

"Then I suggest you practice," I say sternly as I frown at her. "Ljuba, you can do this. You've had the luxury of taking your time, weaving for a profit. But that time in your life is behind you now. Now, out here? It's do or die. You have to master this if you want any chance of survival."

I sigh as I look back at the box, the anxiety mixing with motion sickness as I nod vaguely.

"Pull over," I say as I sink to sit in the chair proper, "I think I'm going to be ill."

As soon as the van's stopped, I'm out the door with the box forgotten in my seat. The wheels are still rolling as I pace out onto the sidewalk, heaving in gulps of air before planting my hands on my knees to try and catch up with myself.

43 Re: The Failings of Time on Thu Feb 02, 2017 10:48 pm

My nerves are frayed as I use my fingers to comb my hair back, quickly pulling it up and out of my face into something more austere and convincing of a Guardian's stern look so I can get out of the van. Shutting the door behind me, I walk around the van, cutting an icy glare at anyone who pauses to stare at Ljuba, their looks ranging from sympathy to disgust to curiosity.

"Hareket et!" I say sharply to anyone who lingers too long, the authority in my voice sending them scampering as I come over to stand protectively near Ljuba. "Perhaps we can get a room here for the night," I offer lightly. "We can work on this together."

"How?" I ask earnestly as I stand to look at him, concern written on my features. "In a day, I won't be able to touch you."

45 Re: The Failings of Time on Thu Feb 02, 2017 11:39 pm

"Shh!" I hiss, my eyes widening as I look around anxiously before dropping my voice. "I'm saving the salve for when I absolutely need it. We can use it for practice at night."
