"One of the things in there is mine," I say as I glance at her. "If you can figure out which one, we can go from there."

I frown slightly as I look back at the box that's been tucked behind me in the seat. I twist to grab it, sighing as I push the top open so I can sift through the items inside.

"You make it sound so simple," I say tiredly, my fingers pinching a small lock of hair before dropping it and my nail flicks what appears to be a tooth out of my way. "Nothing in here is diseased, is it? I don't want to make it out of the city alive just to die from some nasty infection down the road."

"Well, I wouldn't go sticking any of them in your mouth, if that's what you were planning," I smirk as I pull up another alley to park beside a large building that I'm hoping is some kind of inn. "A few of their owners are not exactly reputable."

My nose wrinkles in disgust as I shut the box again, peering out the window at the building beside us with a bit of suspicion.

"This is an inn?" I ask, glancing back at Lavellan unconvinced.

"There are drunks stumbling in and out," I shrug as I shut the van off and start gathering my things. "Where there's a tavern, there's usually an inn."

I stretch before shoving my door open and step out stiffly.

"I just hope the rooms on a low floor," I grumble, turning back to the van as I look around for whatever I'd want to bring up. "My joints are starting to feel like crushed glass."

"It never hurts to ask," I say as I shrug my bag onto my shoulder and then close the van to lock it up. "Remember, though. Don't wander from my side. Around here, there are only certain circumstances where a witch can go somewhere without a Guardian."

"Ugh," I grumble softly, tucking the box under my arm before swinging my own bag onto my shoulder. "I think you just like bossing me around. That's why you brought me here." I say before we get out of the alley, my voice dropping entirely as I look up the some of the people stumbling out of the bar.

"It does excite me a bit, yes," I grin as I go to push the door open for her. After walking into the tavern, however, I find myself questioning the decision as we draw the gaze of well over half the room just crossing to the bar to ask for a room. Fortunately, my discomfort translates into a gruffness that seems to put others off from approaching us as I talk to the woman behind the bar.

I linger close to Lavellan as he speaks with the barkeep, careful not to touch as I look around the tavern. It smells heavily of soups and gravies and fried foods, and my body can't decide if it's tempted or nauseated by the richness of the smells.

I'm leaning more towards nauseated as Lavellan is handed a set of keys and turns to face me, and I plaster on the best little smile I can as I look up at him.

"Room?"

"First floor," I smile lightly at her before nodding across the inn toward the stairs. "Yüziki, 102."

Palming the keys, I put a gloved hand behind Ljuba as I lead the way through the bar. As we pass the crowds of drunks, I can't help the disapproving scowl that mars my features as a couple of men make obscene kissing noises at Ljuba, their jeers too crude for me to translate for her.

I keep my head down as Lavellan guides me towards the hall of rooms, not needing to understand the language to appreciate how foul the remarks must be. If I were of more sound mind, I might have had the stones to walk with my head held high, perhaps even throw a sneer towards them, but all I want to do is crawl into a bed as though it might offer some relief.

As we hit the room, I step aside so Lavellan can let us in, and I find myself still vaguely wondering how it is we've wound up here. This world feels wholly different from the one we were in just a week ago. Following him in, I drop my bag once the door's shut and waste no time crawling into the bed with the box in hand.

"Did you order any food?" I ask as I set myself up by the pillows, leaning back against the headboard with the box in my lap as my fingers trace its edges absently.

"They'll bring it shortly," I sigh as I drop my own bag onto the bed and begin digging through it. "Perks of being a 'guardian'. Everyone wants your favor, so this little trip may wind up costing us nothing. I didn't even have time to ask for food before they were offering us the best thing on the menu."

"Oooh, is it something with vegetables?" I ask a bit cheerily, "Like raw ones!?"

"Wha-?" I ask before laughing at a loss. "I don't know, maybe?"

"I want vegetables," I respond with a grin, sinking against the pillows as I pull the box open and start looking through it again. "Everything in there looked fried or coated in gravy, and it made me think about celery and how celery just sounds really good."

"Fried things made you think of... celery?" I ask skeptically before shrugging. "Personally? I just really want something covered in cheese."

"I want something fresh and cold and-" I shrug, "I kind of want fish, been craving it for awhile, but celery will do."

"Well, the Capital is by the coast, perhaps we'll be able to have some there," I say absently as I look through the clothes I had purchased in the last town we were in. Unfortunately, none of it really has that stately appeal I was looking for.

"We need to do more shopping," I sigh.

"What do you need?" I ask as I glance up at him, stretching my legs out on either side of the box so I can kick my shoes onto the floor.

71 Re: The Failings of Time on Sat Feb 04, 2017 12:39 am

"Something pompous, but not extravagant," I respond with a frown as I glance back at her. "Something a Guardian would wear. And a touch of armor wouldn't hurt to really sell it. Right now, I'm just going off of looking like an arsehole."

"You do do that really well," I say with a nod, staring at the contents of the box at a loss. Nothing in it stands out.

"I don't even know where to start." I say after a moment, "I'm half afraid I'm going to blow it up again."

"You wouldn't be the first witch to have a bad first night here," I smirk before sighing as I tuck the clothes back in the bag. "Just concentrate like you normally do," I offer lamely as I come over to sit at the foot of the bed.

"Think of... kittens, or whatever it is you think of," I shrug as I lie back on the bed, kicking my shoes off as I stretch out more comfortably.

I narrow my eyes at him before picking up the first thing my fingers touch - a small fold of cloth with something dried inside. Skin, maybe?

"I don't want to hold this if I can help it, so can you just tell me if this is yours..?" I ask as I hold the item up, cradled in the cloth. "And also, what is it?"

"It's a scale," I respond dryly, raising an eyebrow at her. "I really hope I don't have to tell you that's not mine."
