I glance at her with a frown, looking her over thoughtfully. Nodding in understanding, I return my attention to my bag.

"Me, too," I admit before nodding toward Zenovia. "Before Novi, I mean."

"So, are you still running?" I ask him curiously, still watching him as I tuck my arms into the sleeves of my jacket.

I hesitate as I tilt my head to the side thoughtfully. "You know, I don't know," I admit with an awkward laugh. "I sort of stopped thinking about it after Novi came for me. As long as she's around, I'll be fine."

I glance towards the front, the silence between them sitting a little uneasy with me as I grab a pillow and blanket and move towards the rear of the van. Nodding towards him, I set up another spot beside me before settling into the corner there.

"You like her?" I ask softly once he's reluctantly joined me in the back, my voice low as I glance back to the front. "She's nice to you?"

"Yeah," I nod as I glance toward Novi. "She's probably the nicest person I've met since I was a kid.

"Why?" I frown, dropping my voice as I look at her seriously. "Is yours not nice to you?"

I can't help but grin slightly as I nod, "He's a bit of a prick, but he's nice in his way."

"He's sort of intimidating," I admit under my breath, my gaze catching his as he glances back at us in the rearview mirror. I pale a little at his scowling expression before he, very pointedly, reaches over to turn the stereo up so he can't hear us.

Pulling one of the blankets over my front, I shift uncomfortably against the wall of the van before chuckling at the music gets louder.

"Well, he is a bit of a prick." I repeat, looking at Aodh with an amused smirk. "He means well, though. Just has a bit of a short temper... Not one for talking, much. And no patience." I add, my head cocking slightly, "He's not very warm at all, really."

"Fuck off," the man responds gruffly as he stares at the road with a grumpy scowl.

Laughing quietly, I twist to face Aodh better.

"So, tell me something about you." I say, the conversation managing to take my mind off of the pain building in my joints. "How old are you?"

"Nineteen," I respond as I settle back and pull out an old, ratty looking sketch pad. I offer her a slight smile as I pull a nubby little piece of sharpened charcoal from the binding, my eyes already taking in the details of her scarred features. "What about you? You don't look very old."

"Twenty-eight," I nod, watching him with a vague curiosity. "So not very old, no.

"You draw?"

"Sort of," I respond with a faint blush. "I didn't learn it or anything, like at a school... It's just something I've always sort of done."

"Can I see?" I ask, my head craning lightly to try and peer over the edge of the notebook.

I curl up around the notebook instinctively as I narrow my eyes at her before glancing down at the paper. I have a rough outline of the unscarred side of her face and I've just started putting the detail into her eyes. Frowning slightly, I glance at her again before taking the rough sketch out of the notebook before handing it to her.

I take the notebook, the blanket I'd been curled in falling into my lap as I sit up to look at it better.

"These are really good," I smile up at him, taking care as I flip through the pages and inspect the various sketches. People, animals, even some building I recognize from outside the tavern we'd just left. Even the more fantastical sketches, while lacking the same attention to detail, are impressive. "You've been drawing your whole life?"

"Pretty much, yeah," I nod as i continue sketching on the loose leaf of paper, using a book for support. "I didn't know the language when I got here, so it came in handy. I could just draw what I wanted."

"I don't know," I shrug, frowning to myself as I continue my sketch, occasionally glancing up at Ljuba. "I was only four when my gift manifested," I say, repeating the phrase Novi had used to describe what happened when I'd told her about it. "Someone broke into the nursery where I lived. I got scared, and suddenly I was in the middle of a town square during the spring festival."

"Well, I moved between worlds so I mean... maybe they did?" I shrug at a loss. "But how would they know where to look? I've done it one other time since then and it took me six thousand miles and three oceans away from where I was."

"Stop-" I shake a hand at him, my eyes pinching slightly as I try to grasp what it is he's said. "You moved worlds?"

"I think so," I nod with add much certainty as I can muster. "I've looked and asked, and no one has heard of any place like where I was."

124 Re: Hitchhiker's Guide to Awkward Circumstances on Wed Mar 01, 2017 7:43 pm

"That's-" I shake my head, glancing to the front of the vehicle warily before sighing. "Okay."

I have more questions, but the piercing pain in my temple is enough to make me hold them for now. Besides, Aodh seems quick to return to his sketching, his gaze occasionally darting up towards me before sheepishly averting again. He's drawing me, goddamnit.

Doesn't matter. All I can focus on is trying to breathe through the excruciating discomfort as the van rocks underneath me. With Lavellan's music buzzing at the front of the van, I manage to settle into a somewhat comfortable position as Aodhagan busies himself a few feet away. Curled into my jacket, I find the metallic bee tucked into one of my pockets and fidget with it aimlessly as I close my eyes, hoping beyond hope that there's some sliver of memory I can pull from the trinket.

The van falls into a comfortable silence as we drive further away from the safety of the wall and the nation beyond its border. Or at least it would be comfortable if I didn't have the nagging knowledge of what the woman in the seat next to me happened to be. I can barely concentrate on the music as I stare blankly at the road, willing myself to stay calm and keep every breath even and free of whatever magical snitch it is that gives my kind away to people like her.

I study her in the silence, glancing her way every time she moves, and listening as she hums to herself under the sound of the radio. Her features are striking and proud, something I'd noticed in many of the people who went on to be the guardians of the Chantry. Unlike other guardians, however, there seems to be a softness around her edges - something only glimpsed in the way she glances in the mirror to see Aodhagan in the reflection behind us, a smudge of charcoal on his cheek as his attention melts into the paper propped against his knees.

The hours tick by, the station fading out on the stereo before I'm forced to find another one. Ljuba seems to be sleeping soundly, only moving occasionally as we hit a rough patch in the road. Her movement, too, draws my gaze from the road to watch over her in the rearview mirror until she's settled back down again.

Every now and then, Zenovia will try to strike up a conversation before falling back into silence when I offer a curt response, speaking as few words as I can or merely grunting if I can get away with it. I'm not sure if my rudeness leaves an awkward taste in her mouth or not, but if it does, she doesn't show it as she leaves me to my quiet musings.

It isn't until Ljuba begins to stir again that I break the silence of my own accord, my head twisting back to glance at her as she groans from the back of the van.

"You alright back there?" I ask as I turn back around to watch the road, my gaze flickering up to the mirror as she continues to fuss.
