"Really?!" I ask, my head cocking to the side a bit as I look at her hairline expectantly. "I mean... I don't know what I man... sorry, I'm staring, aren't I?"

"I don't have horns," I chuckle, taking another drink of water before sitting back. "Or a tail, so don't bother looking for that, either."

"I don't have a tail either," I say quickly, my tone coming out almost defensive in its quickness, though it's more a denial than anything.

"No, I know." I remark as I glance towards the bar, spitting the innkeeper filling a tray with plates of our food.

"Okay," I say, frowning a little as I shift uncomfortably. I hadn't really needed her reminder to be aware of the missing appendage. No, the constant state of neurological pain from its departure makes sure that I never forget. Still... it feels strange to have someone speak so matter of factly about it.

"Thank you!" I say, thankful for the distraction when our food arrives.

"So what is different about you?" I ask as I immediately start in on the plate before me.

"Ah, I really can't say." I say once the innkeeper's departed, fork and knife in hand as I start cutting up the food on my plate. "Guardian nonsense, and all."

"When you say guardian stuff," I frown. "Do you mean you can't talk about it like for the reasons I can't talk about my differences? Or because it's like the family I used to stay with sometimes... because it's not proper and it might look bad?"

"Both?" I respond, my tone lowering as I set my knife aside. "To be honest with you, I've never really questioned it. It's just something we don't discuss.

"I've never really mentioned it to anyone outside of my own circles before," I admit, stabbing at a piece of sausage before raising my fork to inspect it before popping it in my mouth, "but how can I expect you to be upfront with me if I'm not the same for you?"

"Thank you," I say quietly as I stare at my food. "For telling me? It wasn't like this when I was little," I admit a little hesitantly. "I don't remember much from that time in my life, but I remember definitely not being different. Everyone was like me - some even more outlandish!

"And it wasn't something that anyone shied away from," I say as I cock my head to the side, almost perturbed. "I have this distinct memory of sitting out in the dirt in front of this old school or church type building, and this huge man with these big ridges on his forehead talking to this teeny little woman who looked more like me only they both had these big ol' horns and tails. And they just joked about how much bigger and bonier his face was.

"And that's just how it was," I shrug as I stuff a bite of hash in my mouth. "No one looked like anyone else, and they all just laughed about it. Did their own magics and things, too. Even the carriages were pulled by magical things.

"Then I wound up here somehow and everything is all backward. I only saw one person with anything growing out of his head, and he was one of those bull people? I don't know. The mayor hung him for banditry, and people joked about turning him into steaks."

I frown as I watch him, shaking my head lightly.

"People are notoriously cruel, but his crime likely had little to do with his appearance." I offer, "Besides, it won't be like that in the Capital. There's a richly diverse population there, and while I can't say for sure if there'll be another like you, I do feel like there'll be plenty of people who qualify as different."

"Well, eat up." I grin, already working steadily on my own plate, "I'm sure the prayers will be ending soon, hopefully I'll catch sight of that guy."

A palpable tension still hangs in the air as Ljuba and I make our way out of the room. Or at least I feel like there is - most of it my fault, as it usually tends to be in situations like these. I make no effort to ease it, however, instead making a beeline straight for the counter to return the key to our room. We're barely there for two seconds before I feel the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.

Glancing off to the right, I catch two pairs of eyes looking our way before quickly looking back toward the bartender as he takes our key and I nod my thanks. As I turn to steer Ljuba toward the door, I hope against hope for a moment before groaning as I catch the dark haired woman getting to her feet out of the corner of my eye, her gaze never straying far from Ljuba and I.

"We've caught some attention," I say under my breath as we make our way to the exit. "Just play it cool - don't try to lie about your gifts, and let me do the talking."

Aodh is left with his meal as I excuse myself to approach the Guardian making his way for the door, realizing for the first time I have no real plan of what to say.

"Brother!" I call as he glances my way, hoping to stop him before he can venture into the cold winds outside.

I try to contain my distasteful grimace as I look back at her, instead offering a small bow of my head to acknowledge her.

"Sister," I say politely, pointedly not offering my hand in greeting as I keep it on the handle of the door. "Something I can do for you?"

I smile softly at the two, making a point to nod politely at his charge as she seems to dip behind him slightly. Shit. Guardians with gunshy charges tend to be less courteous when it comes to favors, I should know.

"Yes, actually." I smile regardless, coming to stand before him as my arms fold behind my back, falling back into the familiar position as I address another guardian. "I've a charge I'm escorting to the capital, but it's taken us a bit longer to get back than I expected, and because of that, we've no transport to get us through the snow.

"I couldn't help but assume after last night, that you were heading to the Capital for a similar reason." I continue, glancing with a polite nod to the woman behind him. "I would be eternally grateful if you could help us."

Fuck. My expression remains passive as my thoughts race, trying to figure out what to do. I can see her 'charge' watching us with wide eyes - the kind of eyes that haven't yet toppled one way or the other as they teeter between fear and wonder. Fuck.

"A new charge?" I ask after taking a moment to size the two of them up.

"Yes," I nod, glancing back over my shoulder to glance at Aodh with a reassuring smile, "He's young, and perhaps a bit odd, but he's a good kid." I say fondly as I turn back to the guardian before me.

"He gets carsick, which is why we've stuck to traveling by foot or airship up until now, but with the weather turning..." I shrug with a faint frown.

I know I'm going to regret it, but I let out a heavy sigh before nodding reluctantly.

"Very well," I concede, a heavy weight settling in the pit of my stomach as I do. "But we're leaving soon, so grab your things."

"We're ready to go," I nod to him with a grateful smile, "I didn't want to inconvenience you anymore than necessary.

"I'll get some containers for our breakfast, there's plenty if either of your are hungry... Or...?" I glance to his charge before gesturing towards the bar, "If there's anything either of you would like?"

"Oma?" I ask as I glance back at her, her gaze turning to me uncertainly for a moment before she shakes her head, smiling politely toward the guardian.

"I think we're good, thank you," I smile slightly. "We have provisions in the van."

The guardian smiles at us before nodding, her hands coming forward to wring slightly before she sighs.

"Right, then," She starts, "We'll met you outside. Thank you, again."

And with that, she's turned back to the table where the young set of eyes still watch us. Lavellan's opened the door and we're out in a heartbeat, my posture still stiff as I adjust the bag on my shoulder. I wait until we're around the corner and the van's in sight to give Lavellan a tired look.

"Oma?"

"And I'm Ansiel," I respond as I glance behind us with a frown.

"Why didn't you just say no..?" I ask quietly as we come up to the van, my eyes watching the corner of the tavern as Ansiel opens the van up.

View user profile http://sordidnations.forumotion.com
"Because," I practically grind out, my tongue going dry as the words catch in my mouth for a moment. "She's got some poor, stupid kid on her heel who thinks he's about to have all the answers handed to him. But he's being brought in by a fucking recruiter. If he's lucky, he'll spend the rest of his life scrubbing dishes and never using his magic again. If. Big fucking if.

"Recruiters only go out for the bad ones like me," I say hollowly. "If we leave him here, he's as good as dead."
