"Then I hope she's a better guardian than mine was and she thinks about the kid before making any important decisions," I shrug before glancing at her out of the corner of my eye. Her face is cross with disapproval. Sighing, I return my eyes to the road and shake my head. "I'm not going to do anything if I can avoid it, Lju. But we didn't come all this way just to be ousted now."

"How soon is our next stop?" I ask abruptly, looking back out my window.

"I can't even process this," I add in exasperation, "What the fuck is this life? What twisted series of events put us here? That child back there is scared enough without this shit..."

Groaning, I rub a hand across my face and look back at Lavellan. "How'd she react, at least?" I ask, my tone a mixture of defeat and tired. "To... whatever outed us?"

"Not... bad, per se," I admit as I glance back at the two unconscious figures in the back of the van. "She was actually rather patient... tried to help you. But then she wanted us to leave, and we came to something of an impasse."

"Leave?" I frown vaguely, twisting to look back at them. "She didn't want to... I don't know- Arrest us or something?"

"Well, that's the concern, isn't it?" I frown. "Call me paranoid, but I don't exactly trust someone who makes a living abducting magical children so they can be enslaved by a fanatical church

"Abduct is a strong word." I sigh, "He seemed really comfortable with her, which given how shy he was, seems like a good sign."

I can't help but scoff at that as I give her a disapproving look. "Yeah," I say dryly. "Because who wouldn't jump at the opportunity to not be living on the streets, scared and alone and likely hunted? That's the charm of these people, Lju. They can't be trusted. I mean, maybe she's good, maybe she genuinely thinks she's helping. But if she is, she's misguided. She has no idea what she's condemning that poor kid to."

Despite wanting to, I know I have no grounds to argue. I haven't had any experience with this part of the world, or this Chantry. I don't know any more than Lavellan's already told me. Still, I can't help but wonder if his distrust is well-founded.

"So, what is your plan once she's awake?" I ask nonchalantly, "Are we bringing them with us to the Capital?"

I don't respond at first, instead swallowing as I focus thoughtfully on the road. The truth is, I don't have a plan. I'm not used to having a companion with me that I have to consider when I find myself in situations such as this. It's more problematic than I would have imagined.

"Would it worry you terribly if I said I intended to make it up as we go along?" I ask hesitantly.

"I don't know anymore." I respond, sitting back in my seat. "Honestly, Lavellan, I don't know how the fuck we got here. Have we even been out of Skycrest for a week? Have we stopped even once to catch our breath?"

"Skycrest was our breath," I say quietly as I look over at her a little sadly. "Try not to think about it," I say a little more casually as I let out a sigh and make a note of the signs passing as we drive. "We'll find our rest soon enough."

I only sigh as my arms cross and I sit back, staring out the window listlessly.

"No," I say simply, "we won't."

"No, we won't," I concede with a sigh. "And even if we do, it will only be temporary."

Exhaling roughly, I continue to look out the window in annoyance.

"Well, we need to stop somewhere, I gotta pee." I say simply, glancing over my shoulder towards the two in the back. "And we need to do something about them. Having them wake up while we're driving is stupid, it's dangerous. I'd rather be pulled over and in control of the situation, not driving with our backs to them."

"There should be a rest stop in a few miles, I think," I sigh as I look around at the scenery uncertainly. It's all changed so much, I can't be sure the rest stop will even still be there. "Can you pee in a cup..?" I ask evasively.

"Not in the passenger seat of a moving car," I respond seriously, cutting him a look that says there won't be any swaying on that point.

"You know," I start, my tone a little too aggressive before I catch myself as I notice her tensing to argue. Exhaling sharply, I press my lips together before grumbling the rest.of my complaint. "This isn't nearly as much fun as it was before."

"Oh, is this supposed to be fun?" I ask a bit harshly, scoffing as I sit back in my seat to look out the window.

"No, this is punishment."

Sighing, I see what looks to be a fueling station up ahead, sitting up as I try to make it out in the snow. "Is that it?" I ask, narrowing my eyes as I frown, noticing the dilapidated exterior of the abandoned rest stop. "Looks emptied."

"Fantastic," I say roughly before pulling the wheel sharply to the right. My reckless driving is only made worse by the pothole and gravel littered road as we pull into the old rest stop. The brakes squeal as I stop abruptly in front of the building, throwing it into park before digging between the seats for a pack of cigarettes.

"Go pee!" I say waving at her in annoyance. "I'll check to make sure our new friends aren't dead yet," I add a little less aggressively as I bring a cigarette to my lips to light it.

Sneering, I crawl out of the passenger door, bracing myself against the cold winds as I head towards the worn looking building. It's been abandoned, but only recently, I assume, given the still intact doors and windows. Hell, it's even locked when I try to fiddle with the door.

Glancing back at Lavellan, I shrug before peering into the dusted glass door, the inside of the shop full of shelves lined with picked through goods. Sighing, I make my way around the side of the building, my legs wiggling with the urge to go as I look for another way inside.

My stomach is twisted uncomfortably as I hear the woman crawl out of the passenger side door, my hand hovering near Aodhagan cautiously as I keep my eyes closed against the sound of movement in the van. Even if I opened them, there's nothing for me to see but Aodhagan's backside and the floor.

I can feel the aura of magic circling around Aodh, keeping him asleep, and I leave it to engulf him as I hear the silver haired man crawling into the back of the van, my mind racing and coming up empty. Empty. I've come up with nothing since I came to nearly fifteen minutes ago, the only thing I can think of being the pain in my temple and the overwhelming feeling of being fucked.

As I crawl over the mess of bags and litter from our trip, I pull the small pistol from my belt and hold onto it casually as I squat down next to the unconscious figures near the back of the van. There's a boredom and lack of consideration in my posture as I take the cigarette from my lips and hold it up in front of Aodhagan's face, watching as the smoke moves with his breath.

When I do the same with the guardian whose pale face is marred by a smear of blood, her nose wrinkles reflexively, as though holding back a sneeze. I bring the cigarette back to my lips and nudge her temple lightly with the tip of the gun. It would be a perfectly harmless, gentle touch if it weren't for the cold steel of the pistol carrying that subtle threat with it.

"Morning, sister," I say warmly. "Are you feeling well?"

My jaw tenses, and I cringe at the sensation of the cold at my temple as my eyes open slowly to look up at him. I can feel my eyes water from the acrid smoke still lingering in my face.

"I've got a headache." I say stiffly.

"I did try to find an acceptable compromise," I shrug as I take a long drag from my cigarette. "Maybe now we can talk with a little more reason."

I shift tensely against the floor, pulling my arm from under my side where it's long fallen asleep as I sigh and watch him.

"You've a gun to my head," I respond, "Can I do anything but agree?"

40 Re: Reluctant Passengers on Fri May 05, 2017 6:41 pm

"I'm glad you've decided to see things my way," I smile as I take one last puff from my cigarette before putting it out on the wheel well I've settled on. Sighing, I rest the gun in my lap and look the pale woman over thoughtfully.

"Listen," I say seriously. "I genuinely don't want anyone getting hurt here. My friend and I have been through quite a lot, and I don't exactly know just how much chaos she can endure before I'm forced to dump her somewhere for the sake of my own survival. But I would prefer not to find out.

"As soon as we have the medicines we've come for, we'll be leaving," I say firmly, my gaze flickering over to the unconscious teenager still, miraculously, under the effects of my spell... at Zenovia's mercy, I'm sure. "How we part ways after that is entirely up to you."
