I stare at Emhyr for a moment before nodding, curling my arms across my chest as I step towards him, my voice dropping.

Emhyr,” I say weakly, my words trembling as I shift anxiously, “thank you.”

*E*

"Please, don't," I say quietly as I frown at her before putting a hand on her arm to coax her back toward the house. "You should go inside. Solas and I can take care of Wolter; get him ready for the pyre, if you like.

"Or," I hesitate as I watch her for a moment, the tears on her cheeks coming silently. "I could come in with you - if you like - while Solas gets him ready?"

Nodding vaguely, I let Emhyr lead me away from Solas and the horses behind me, the cold biting at my cheeks as we make our way back to the house.

I don’t dare look back as I hear Solas approaching Wolter on the house, the sound of fabric rustling and weight shifting getting lost in the wind as I brace myself against the cold. Pulling the cloak tighter, I follow Emhyr inside, stepping through the door and coming to a stop just inside.

“What set her off..?” I ask again once the door snaps shut, keeping my back to him as I stare blankly ahead of me.

"It's not important," I frown, shifting uncomfortably as I stare down at my gloves as I take them off. "The Wolter that you knew, the one that you cared for... he was gone a long time ago. And you should know, I did try to stop her, but she didn't act on impulse. Nell, I mean... she had proper reason. She was just - faster than I was."

“So you know...” I nod as a fresh wave of tears threaten me.

“He was a good man,” I say thickly as I turn to look at him seriously, “You need to know that. He was a good man, but he was just sick.”

"I know," I say quietly as I glance up at her with a frown. "And I'm sorry for that. He deserved better than all of this. We could have done better. We could have saved him... and you."

“He couldn’t be saved.” I say simply, shaking my head as I watch him. “Not anymore. You were right out there. There was nothing left of him in there...”

133 Re: The Unexpected on Fri Feb 09, 2018 10:59 pm

"But this?!" I ask, waving my hand toward her and in the vague direction of the horses and Solas. "This was never meant to happen. What became of him, what he did to you, what he tried to do... we go to such awful lengths to try to help people like him, people who want to be rid of their magic so they're safer, and what becomes of them? What good is it if something like this can happen? How can it be justified??

"I'm sorry," I wince after staring at her for a long moment before realizing that I've rambled my frustrations at her. "You're grieving and I've gone and bothered you with my own crisis in faith. That was thoughtless of me. I only meant... I wish you could have been spared all of this; that the Temple could have truly helped him in the way that he deserved - without taking your husband from you."

“This isn’t your temple’s fault.” I answer him weakly, shaking my head.

"An accomplice is just as guilty as the perpetrator," I sigh as I look her over sadly. "We may not have made his choices for him, but we helped him dig the hole he fell into.

"But it hardly matters now, does it?" I manage a dull smile as I hold a hand out behind her back and nod toward the kitchen. "Let's fix you some tea, yeah? We'll have some tea and we can talk, if you like."

I hum a soft response as I let him guide me to the kitchen, looking at Evander sleeping soundly as we pass.

“He never had that rage before,” I remark as we walk, taking a seat at the island as I stare blankly at the countertop. “Not before the last visit. I was making tea.” I laugh weakly, rubbing my hands over my face as I shake my head. “I was making tea, and he kissed my neck- the way he used to. But we’d just talked about bringing the kids to the temple, re-educating them, and I shrugged him off and... he did something he’d never done before. He snatched my hair and-

“He was with his mother when she was killed, you know.” I say as I look up at Emhyr. “He told me once what happened. How they were coming home from the shops when he was ten or eleven, and these men stopped them. His and Nell’s mother was a fearsome woman, and she told him to run before turning on those men, so he did.

“Her head was on a pike at the edge of the city next he saw her. He had nightmares from it, and they drove him mad.”

"I'm sorry," I frown as I watch her, my hand still hanging limply from the cupboard where I'd begun my search for Solas's tea.

"I never really think about all of this from the other side," I admit quietly. "I mean, what you just described, that could have been Nell tonight. It would have been, had any hunter other than myself been there to witness what happened. But it wouldn't have been her who had done wrong; she would have died innocent.

"It makes me wonder," I confess, my voice barely above a whisper, as though worried some disembodied power might overhear me. "How many others have died when they should have lived?"

I sigh heavily, dismissing the thought as I return to preparing the tea.

I offer a weak smile in return before my attention turns to my nails as I pick them absently. The silence that falls over us as Emhyr readies the kettle and the tea is almost comfortable considering the circumstances, my mind wandering freely as he quietly works. What was surely only minutes felt like ages, though, by the time I clear my throat and look at him anxiously.

“I’m sorry for what you had to see tonight,” I say meekly, my hand coming up as my nails pick at a nonexistent spot on my lip before I drop it back to my lap. “For the position it put you in...

“I’m not unfamiliar with Nell’s magic,” I frown, “I mean, I can only assume I know what she did tonight, but... For a man of the Temple, of faith to witness and allow-“

"I'm no stranger to this life," I say, shaking my head dismissively at her apology as I keep my gaze on my work. "I know I'm - you know. Temple. Hunter. All that. But-"

I sigh as I drag a hand through my hair before shrugging as I pull the kettle off of the stove to pour into the cups I'd prepared. "I had a girl once. She was a bit like Nell, actually," I chatter on, still not looking at her. "Hot tempered, little bit full of herself, mouthy as all get out. And... she had magic."

"Don't know!" I say with an exaggerated sigh as I load our cups onto a tray and turn to join her. I smile slightly as I hand her one of the cups before taking my own and sitting down across from her. "She disappeared somewhere, never to be seen or heard from again, far far away from the reach of the Temple or anyone else.

"Or so I imagine," I add non-committally as I blow on my tea and takea careful sip.

“You’re not at all like I thought you’d be,” I smirk slightly, warming my hands on the cup as I watch the stain of tea leaves swirl inside. “And I am eternally grateful for that...”

“Everyone deserves their secrets,” I nod softly, the sting of tears worsening as I smile up at him sadly, “I mean, who wants to seem weak or... I didn’t want Nell to know.”
